This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Heroscape.

No joke.

Ok, I've seen this @ Wlamart for quite some time and never really gave a good look mostly because I had the idea in my head that there is no way that Walmart could stock a minis game worth playing.

Guess what the Wife gets me for christmas? The new Marro set!:D
She new I liked geeky little toy armies , so she saw this at the store a picked it up for me.

When I opened it I was a bit skeptical, but I understood and appreciated her thought process. Of course I was happy that she got me the game because a game for Christmas is better than most presents I could get.

Well, this past weekend I decided "what the hell, I've got it, I better atleast try it".  I invited my brother and a friend over and we busted it open, read the rules, set it up, and next thing we knwe we had played 4 games taking up almost 6 hours.

Had a blast.:D

My observations:

#1- The terrain pieces are very cool little snap-together thingies. I could see these being used for D&D.

#2- The rules are simple yet robust enough to allow for as much strategy and tactics as most other minis games. It took us only 15 mins to get up and running.

#3- The minis are about on par with D&D minis and even have a round base. I could also see the minis being used for D&D.

#4- The minis are prepainted. This scores big points with me because I hate painting but love playing minis games.

#5- Price, you can get the basic set for ~$20 and you get around 30 minis + terrain. You can buy expansion sets for $10-$20 or less. NON-Collectible!

#6- Lots of players to be found. There was a local tourney this weekend that have over 30 players.

#7- Cross-genre. Pretty much every genre is included in the game. you can play a fantasy army, sci-fi, horror, supers, or whatever you like.

I suggest checking it out if you havn't, it's well worth the $20.

Blackleaf

I got this last Christmas.  The figures are nice. :)

Oh, shitchya!  My parents got my son the "Hive of the Marro" set for the holidays, and we're both enjoying it, so much so that we've gone out and bought more expansion sets and figs.  The rules themselves are a bit simplistic, but they play fast and furious.

I'm not convinced that the point values on the models are really well balanced, though.  We were playing what should have been a balanced giant-killer scenario, and my 4 Greek soldiers and 2 Roman gladiators took out, in succession, a giant, a black dragon, and an ice dragon.  I should have been way, way outclassed.

By the way, if you have $13 burning a hole in your pocket, check out the nearest Target store.  Apparently the Marvel Heroscape set tanked commercially, and they're terribly overstocked.  You may or may not have a use for the various superhero/villain figs, but at the 50% discount the set is worth it for the extra terrain tiles alone.

!i!

Heroscape is a totally sweet game.  My brother got it for me for Christmas last year ('06) and I've picked up some of the expansions since then.  I was surprised at how robust it is, while being easy to get going with at the same time.  And I can use the minis for all kinds of games depending on what I am running. :)

So, where was this tournament at, and are they doing another one anytime soon? :)

The tourney was at Outpost 2000 in Coon Rapids. They were talking about haveing another one in about six months. There's a tourney in Austin in March as well and a giant 75+ person toruney in Forest City, IA (just across the border on 35W) in October.
