This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Cryptic is working on a D&D 4e-based MMO. Linky.

As the title implies, the game is set in the Forgotten Realms (where else?), specifically in video game favorite Neverwinter.

I can only mirror this guy's feelings:

With the passionate fan base the Forgotten Realms setting has, botching this roll would redefine Critical Failure.

A few more interesting tidbits here:

QuoteThe rumors were only partially right. Kind of. Yes, Cryptic is working on a new fantasy-themed multiplayer game, and yes, it takes place in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting...but while it won't officially be a Neverwinter Nights 3 to follow the previous two games from BioWare and Obsidian, it also won't be a traditional massively multiplayer online game, either. The game will instead focus on cooperative play, requiring players to log into a server to start a session and encouraging players to tackle the adventure together. Neverwinter will give you the option to go solo if you prefer, but this will be a much harder way to play. The game will also feature editing tools that will let you create your own custom content and adventures, and it will offer an all-new story that ties into a new series of novels penned by author R.A. Salvatore.

Discuss.

Doesn't sound like a MMO as much as a hosted NWN.  I hope they don't do another DDO.  I don't want to have to do B1 7 times, then B2 6 times, then B3 9 times.  Blech
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Yes, Sean Connery\'s thumb does indeed do megadamage. - Spinachcat

Isuldur is a badass because he stopped Sauron with a broken sword, but Iluvatar is the badass because he stopped Sauron with a hobbit. -Malleus Arianorum

"Tangency Edition" D&D would have no classes or races, but 17 genders to choose from. -TristramEvans

I'm mixed.  Neverwinter 2 had some technical benefits over Neverwinter 1 but overall the game was 2 steps back in most directions.  DDO on the other hand I think is a rather good dungeon crawling emulator when it comes to D&D.  It's far more interesting then the traditional MMO and other D&D rpg's that are just point click kill and spamming the function keys.

DDO was great in that it allowed you to creep, sneak, swim, jump, dodge and actually use different fighting styles.  The problem with DDO is that you only  gained real xp for finishing the dungeon and at around the mid-point those dungeons got ridiculously huge.  So you either had to have hours of spare time or just rush earlier dungeons for diminishing returns.

If someone could put out a game that played like DDO but had a true solo player experience that allowed you to save part way through something that would be a win in my books - huge win in fact.  If it also allowed you to play that game in co-op mode and have a shared experience then for those that wanted allowed you to further create your own stories/dungeons and play through them and even share them.  That would be epic.

And 4e.  AND R.A "Drizzt" Salvatore.

This thing is a recipe for a shit sandwich if I ever saw one.

My guess is this is actually going to be closer to Demon Stone or D&D Heroes from what little description has been provided.  Apparently they're even cutting the classes down to 5, conveniently enough, exactly the number of players in a party.  Exactly what those games did.

Isn't that how the original Neverwinter Nights on AOL worked back in the day?
"In a way, the Lands of Dream are far more brutal than the worlds of most mainstream games. All of the games set there have a bittersweetness that I find much harder to take than the ridiculous adolescent posturing of so-called \'grittily realistic\' games. So maybe one reason I like them as a setting is because they are far more like the real world: colourful, crazy, full of strange creatures and people, eternal and yet changing, deeply beautiful and sometimes profoundly bitter."
