So I bought one of these bad boys a month ago, but have had very little playtime after enrolling at university and starting my degree. Games purchased thus far include Heavenly Sword, Assassin's Creed, Viking, Oblivion, Genji and Devil May Cry 4, and whilst I'm nowhere near finishing any of them the Christmas holidays are fast approaching and my trigger fingers are itching...

So what's available that I should be getting excited over? Fallout 3 and Bioshock get plenty of praise, but is it deserved? Are there any decent action adventure games in the vein of Onimusha? - whilst Genji looks gorgeous I'm finding the gameplay a real disappointment. How about survival horror? The Silent Hill series remain amongst my favourite games of all time, as do the more poetically rendered puzzle adventures like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.

Anything bar sports or drivers will be considered, but I need to know why these games grabbed your attention.

Little Big Planet is the 'now game' for PS3

I ended up being much more of a XBox 360 gamer this generation.  My PS3 disc collection is small, and honestly I didn't have any disc titles I really cared for until just this past week.

If you like Strategy RPGs, you owe it to yourself to get Valkyria Chronicles.  It's the best thing the genre has offered in a while.  And while it's not quite deserving of sharing company in the best ever tier, the gameplay is different enough and the visual design is stunningly beautiful enough to be worth picking up.

If you like fighters, I can say the Mortal Kombat Versus DC Universe game is pretty good.  The caveat is that you must not expect anything beyond simple one on one fighting.  There are no mini-games.  There are no diverse modes of play.  There's just lots of linear beating the crap out of each other.  It's a solid but not stellar title which will appeal to fighting fans.

That's also a good description of Soul Calibur IV.  I don't have the PS3 version, but I imagine it's very similar to the 360 version.  I'll also tell you straight out that Darth Vader is a better character to play than Yoda.

I can't really recommend much else for the PS3 at this point.  I'll close out my recommendations on the assumption you have a backwards compatible PS3, as I do.

Once again, if you like Strategy RPGs, you should grab a copy of Eternal Poison for the PS2.  There's nothing particularly awe inspiring about the graphics or game mechanics, but it's an oddly appealing TRPG with a lot of heart.

Oh you mentioned Fallout 3 and Bioshock.  Bioshock is a solid game that I put many many hours into and Fallout 3 I'm certainly enjoying.  I prefer Fallout 3 over Bioshock, but it's because I prefer the RPG elements of Fallout 3 over the shooter elements of Bioshock.

Thanks for the recommendations so far everyone, keep 'em coming!

Presently I'm leaning towards Fallout 3 and Dead Space, mainly because well rendered RPGs and Survival Horror are favourites of mine. Little Big Planet and the strategy games Gabriel2 mentioned sound cool also. I suppose I'll just have to wait to see waht the Ico team have in store for the current console generation. I just wish they'd hurry up! Ditto for Silent Hill and Resident Evil.

I'd recommend passing on Silent Hill, the series has gone down hill terribly.

Resident Evil 5 though looks amazing and that series has yet to disappoint it just keeps getting better and better.
