This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

eSlick Reader - Do I want this?

I read a capsule review of this on Brett's (brettmb) blog. Here is the capsule review: http://www.pigames.net/store/blog.php?entry=1428.

Does anyone else have experience with this?

Brett, why this reader instead of Sony's eReader or the Kindle? It looks like the eSlick only reads PDFs and no e-books. Does Sony's or the Kindle read PDFs in addition to their e-books?

Thanks!

After looking at the link, I am curious what the price for the eSlick is and how compatible it is with a PC.

Tell us more Brett!
"Meh."

Sony's newer, cheaper reader does not have expandable memory. The PDF-capability also seemed limited last time I checked, but I don't remember the details. I don't know about the older, more-expensive model - it may have dropped in price. I also don't know about the Kindle; last I heard was that is was far from perfect for PDFs.

The eSlick renders pages using Foxit's PDF Reader, so it's pretty close to Adobe standards. I think it can also read txt.

I had problems transferring data on my Mac. After contacting support, they are aware of the issue (with OS X 10.6). I would assume that connection to Windows works smoothly. Regardless, you can pick up a $2 SD-Card reader that plugs into your USB port for really quick access -- eject the SD card, place in reader, connect to PC. You can also put music on the card; the eSlick comes with earphones and can play music while you read.

I got the eSlick for $199 shipped; it was on sale at an online retailer. I'm not sure of the regular price. Here it is for $177.99 (LINK, but there's probably shipping involved).

Looking at the website, they have a new firmware update, which now supports eReader, ePub, and graphics formats. I'm going to try to update it; it needs Windows, so I'll be using my Parallels Virtual Machine on my Mac. I'll let you know if I get it installed and how it works.

Thanks.

I'm wishing that eReader prices would drop quicker. I bought a fully loaded used laptop for $279 that I am using as a backup and mobile unit. With the prices for laptops dropping faster than the prices for eReaders, it is becoming more cost effective to just get a laptop.

But I'd like to have a eReader.

Thanks Brett! So it should read the PDFs I just bought from you via the PDF Grab Bag  :D

What will upgrading to eReader and ePub offer?

Are satisfied with the speed of paging?
Have you found any PDFs that do not display correctly on the device?
What is actual experience in regards to battery life?
Can you book mark pages?
Can you add notes to pages?

Thanks!

brettmb

I haven't run into any problems reading my own PDFs, but it did choke on a few others (I don't remember which ones though).

eReader and ePub are just common e-book formats. If you don't buy that format, it won't matter.

Paging could be faster, but I've seen regular computers have trouble processing some PDFs too. Battery seems pretty good, since the screen consumes power only when changing pages; it consumes nothing when just displaying a static page. You can't bookmark or annotate, but I the update adds bookmarking.

I'm having trouble updating the device. I've done it 4 times now and it's still the old version. I switched from XP to Vista, so we'll see what happens on this attempt.

Thanks for the information! The questions never stop:

Does it have search functionality? It would be nice to use this at the gaming table rather than carrying around books.

Do you think it can last a 4 hour session of gaming on one charge?

How easy is it to read in sunlight? What about a dark room (is it backlit)?

Thanks again for your information and time. My birthday is coming up and I might suggest this as a great gift.

Good luck on the update!

brettmb

No search (maybe the update has it). I'm not sure about the charge; just letting it sit on a single page won't drain the battery though. There is no backlight; the screen is like reading text on a piece of paper, but it can be small depending on your zoom or text reflow.

I gave up on the update. I'll wait to hear back from support.

Thanks for the quick replies. Sorry to hear the update did not go as well as planned.

No problem. Did you like the grab bag PDFs? :)

This might be a useful site for anyone looking to buy an e-reader. I'll likely be getting a kindle before I start my summer travel.

Yes! Thanks for the games! New World Disorder looks like a fun skirmish game and Ghost Stories looks creepy.

I came across this earlier in the year. It is just a concept and some fancy video editing at this stage, but since Bonnier is a major publisher it is interesting to see what they are thinking of bringing to market when the tech catches up. To quote from their blog:

QuoteWe've been working with our friends at Bonnier R&D exploring the future of digital magazines. Bonnier publish Popular Science and many other titles.

Magazines have articles you can curl up with and lose yourself in, and luscious photography that draws the eye. And they're so easy and enjoyable to read. Can we marry what's best about magazines with the always connected, portable tablet e-readers sure to arrive in 2010?
