One of my best pals was the guy who wrote Mechwarrior 2. His name was Eric Peterson but when I met him back in 2005 I knew him thru an online handle of Repomancer. Over the years as I got to know him I found out some really cool facts, like he had access to the PDP-11/75 that all of Infocom's games were originally written on before they were ported to Inform for different 8 and 16 bit platforms (Activision bought Infocom for it's IP back when Eric worked at Activision), or that he'd played live jazz music on stage at Carnegie Hall, that his first ever dungeon Master was Tracey Hickman...and on and on...
Anyway.
Eric lost his battle with several health issues this last week. If you played and enjoyed Mechwarrior 2, Mechwarrior Ghost Bear Legacy, Mechwarrior Mercenaries, Heavy Gear or Interstate '76, you were touched by his work, and I would ask you to remember him well.
Of the things he and I discussed and said to each other, the best compliment he ever paid me was this: "Well, of course. You're my best friend."
I will miss him deeply.
How sad. My condolences. :(
I loved the way MechWarrior handled difficulty settings. :)
The bounding circles got bigger on the bad guys and smaller on you as the difficulty got easier so it was easier to hit them and to make a critical hit on them and harder for them to hit you. While on the harder settings the reverse was true. Playing on the easy setting actually made it seem like you were a better mech pilot. That was brilliant.
Sorry to hear that, sounds like he lived a full and interesting life. I played a good bit of Mechwarrior 2 as a kid and Interstate '76 rings a bell too.
A moment of respect...

Oh yeah I played that. The "Groovy" 70's cutscenes were hilarious.
Sorry to hear. :(
Mechwarrior 2 was and is one of my favorite games. Being a 90s kid, I grew up with video games all around me, but Mech2 is what really got me into PC gaming, and from there, RPGs/tabletop. His accomplishments gave me a lot of joy in and of themselves, but they also helped broaden my horizons, which lead to a lot of fun, good memories, and friendships. I am indebted to Eric.
Sorry to hear this bad news. Peace to you and his family.
