This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Does anyone really play Battletech anymore?

So, Wizkids is being closed by it's parent company, Topps.

I don't know the exact details of who owns what, but one question which does come to mind is what happens to Battletech?  The next question which comes to mind is, does anyone care what happens to Battletech?

I gave up on Battletech when the Clans were added, so I've been Battletech-free for a long time.  I understand there were some new sets released within the past couple of years.  But as for knowing or hearing about anyone interested in the game... Well, I know more people who would play Star Fleet Battles than Battletech.

So, is there really any sizable community which gives a shit about Battletech?  Or is it's only true value to be found in Grade C videogames with ugly and ungainly mech designs (Mechassault)?

I was in the mood ever since I saw the Catalyst demo at Gen Con 07.  I dusted off the old box set (FASA 2nd Edition) and re-read the rules.  We played a 2 on 2 with 50-60 ton mechs.  We had a whole bunch of HeroScape terrain, so instead of a flat map, we were on a 3-D battlefield.
It was SLOOOOOOWWWWWWW going as we had to look up a lot of the rules as we went along, but I hope to play again.

I don't know what the Clans are, having only ever had the 2nd edition rules and no supplements.

I know there is also a group playing at a store in Dickson, TN that seems to do it regularly.

I am probably going to paint up some metal mechs tonight!

Good times...Good times...

Overheard when the PCs were being \'recruited\' to the dark side by some devils:
Devil #1 to the PCs:  Come help us, the benefits are wonderful.
PC #1 to Devil:  Is there a dental plan?
Devil to PC #1:  Sure.  You can have as many teeth as you want.

Currently Playing:  Hunter: the Vigil, D&D set in Kalamar, Beta Testing Dresden Files RPG

Catalyst Game Labs is still printing new Battletech material.  It's solid stuff, even though I know that I'm no fan of the new timeline and plot, I can still use the otherwise excellent rules set and "corrected" TROs (3050 IS mechs that make sense!!!) to have a lot of fun.

We had a huge Battletech club back in the day (1994-1999) and have, by coincedence, begun to "put the band back together" as it were.  We're looking for a January launch with a company-sized group of players.

So, yeah... Battletech is alive and well with at least enough audience to keep Catalyst printing new material, and ensure that there are at least three Battletech events at Millennium Con this weekend.

I still play battletech on occasion - none of that clicky-tech shit for me :D

Good times, indeed.

I play it from time to time, not as much as I used to though.  A friend is reading through my Solaris 7 Map Pack rulesbook to maybe get a minicampaign going which hopefully will be better than his Car Wars one.  (And not like stop after 3 sessions.  I wanted my 18 wheeler with a tank cannon mounted on it!)

I like to use Heroscape terrain for my maps.  As seen below, it works well:

Not exactly portable but it sure looks nice set up.  And the more of it you have the fancier you can get.  Some of the hardcore Heroscape fans make virtual battlefield ART with that stuff...
