This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Diplomacy.  Anyone play?

I was introduced to the boardgame in highschool, and it was the only time I played it actually on a board.  I've GM'd two more games and participated in one, all online.  I've had great fun every time I've played, even if some of the other players managed to jeopardize friendships over petty maneuvering.

I used to be very serious about it. Travelled around the country (and sometimes outside it) to play in Diplomacy tournaments.

I'm pretty fed up with it these days.

I've loved Diplomacy for a long time, but don't get to play very often.

Some folks ran an online version several years ago on one incarnation of these boards.

I got it as a gift early in the '90s, but never managed to find enough people for a real game. :(

Always been intrigued.  I have enough apolitical (antipolitical, even) friends, though, that I've never actually played it.

Getting a game going online isn't too hard.  Anyone interested?  We'd need seven takers.

I would only play Diplomacy with total strangers or, preferably, enemies.  Of course, getting a game of *anything* set up with people you hate, loathe, and despise (and who feel the same way about you) is a bit of a logistical problem.  :)

It's called the internet.

Ah, but think of the possiblities of gathering all your enemies in one place at a predictable time...

Can you actually see me getting a game together with Dr. Midnight, Dinkeldog, and Tleilaxu?  Dink might actually go as far as responding to me, but I can't see most of my infraweb enemies going along with it.  :D

Maybe it's time to cast a wider net and make new enemies.  The the beauty of the facelessness of the internet. You could go into one of the Diplomacy specific places and piss off a whole new crop.  Then wait a few months and repeat under a different username.

I'd love to, but only if with the understanding that the game will play to a 1 person victory conclusion.

the last time I played, we had players playing 10-12 turns into the game to a mutually agreed upon "tie", which completely skewed the game dynamics and rendered the game unplayable.  any two/three nations allied for an eventual tied win will dominate and crush all the rest of the players every time, unless there is an established fact of the eventual backstab that MUST come at some point.

just like in Chess, Diplomacy has a begining, a mid-game and an end-game.  playing until 3-4 people are dominant and then declaring a joint victory so they can start a new game (and have another joint victory there too - go figure) is not acceptable.

I can agree to those terms, phoamslinger

Can it be learned on-line? I'd love to try, but I've never even seen an open box.

It's not difficult at all.  All of the game play is in making deals with others and then fucking them over, all the while trying not to get fucked over yourself.

It's like politics, only it's *even more* likely to lead to murder.  :D
