Title: Decent Fantasy/RPGlike Android games?
Post by: danskmacabre on May 11, 2015, 06:32:02 PM
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 8.4 tablet, which is quite nice and I have a few games that I like to play on it.

Here's a couple of my favourites:

The Talisman boardgame (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nomadgames.talisman&hl=en), converted to android.
It plays out just like the physical boardgame and has expansion packs etc.
It even supports multiplayer.
Well worth a purchase.

9th Dawn (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.valorware.ninthdawn&hl=en)
An Old school top down RPG in the style of Ultima.
It has a lot of depth and is really fun. Feels kind of sandboxy in some ways, although there is an overall story to follow.
They're working on a new game for 9th Dawn called "Realms of Caspartia" , which looks interesting.

So what have you got?

To scratch the jRPG itch, there's always pretty much anything by Kemco.

A few of their games are free. Most of the rest are $4, with a few being $5. Almost all of their games have a "cash shop" feature, but the games aren't difficult, so it's not even remotely necessary to make use of them. So if you're worried about the normal mobile game freemium/pay-to-win thing, it's not a problem here.

My verdict: most of their offerings fall w/in the 4 to 5(out of 10) range. Below average but totally playable to perfectly average. They're not going to blow you away, but they'll scratch the jRPG itch at a $0 to $5 price point depending on which game you pick.

For more mainstream stuff, you could also try those Chaos Rings games by Square Enix. They're solid 6's, if a bit pricey for mobile games, and they can get a bit repetitive. I wouldn't suggest any of the Square Enix ports, though. If a game is over 20 years old like Chrono Trigger, I ain't spending more than $5 on it, period. Record Keepers is their latest attempt at a freemium game, and I got tired of it after about 30 minutes. And avoid All the Bravest like the plague -- what a load of garbage.
