This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

De Profundis - What have you done with it?

Nihilistic Mind

I've acquired this clever little game idea Monday and am itching to get a "game" going.

Essentially, it is a "game" meant to emulate the stories and storytelling style of Lovecraft's stories, all done via letters from one player to another...

I like the idea of writing a bit of in-character fiction once a week and build an over-arching tale via letters then gathering the lot into a cool prop for a Call of Cthulhu, Kult or Nephilim campaign.

What have you done with it?

I've had that book for years but I never got around to reading it or even clearly figuring out what it was...
Is it just a solo-GM game to generate a 'paper trail' for CoC PCs to follow? Or is it a multiplayer RPG of it's own?
I oughtta just go dig mine out and look at it but it's in storage and I'm lazy.

You and a friend write letters to each other, including mailing them via the post office. You start out with relatively benign stuff, and then mention you found a neat book, and then start adding strange stuff in further letters.

It's a player-to-player correspondence game. There are a couple of ways to play it but mostly, it's intended to be in-character letters sent from one "player" to another in order to create/advance/introduce story elements reminiscent of the Lovecraftian Mythos.

Essentially, you write about your character's experiences in the first person, creating an account much like you would find in one of Lovecraft's stories. The game is written entirely as an example of what the end product would be like: a series of collected letters.

It could be done as a solo exercise, but ideally, finding another player to correspond with would be somewhat preferred.

It's not a roleplaying game because success or failure of the character is subjective?

It's certainly a great game aid (generating real CoC props) and it's basically all roleplaying...

Or is it not considered a game because it doesn't need a GM per se?

Just curious where the criteria line is drawn...

Pundit, is the site's policy that we should start the thread in the Other Games forum if we're talking about using a non-RPG as an adjunct to an RPG?

This isn't intended as trick question - an idea came up about using the storygame Fiasco as a way to come up with background material for an RPG, but I could also think of cases like "D&D spells inspired by Magic : The Gathering" cards, or "Have you ever fought out battles in your RPG campaign using Age of Empires...," etc.

Edit : and I don't object if the answer is "Yes, that goes in other games." I'd just like to know which is appropriate.
