This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

D&D Beholder Set - A heads up

I was at the LGS tonight and saw the Collector Beholder Set of D&D Miniatures.

Well. It sucks. Really bad. All but one of the miniatures are translucent, the painting really blows... no redeeming value for the price. Do yourself a favor and avoid it.

We broke open a box and hung them in the flgs Christmas tree.
Employment Counselor: So what do you like to do outside of work?
Oblivious Gamer: I like to play games: wargames, role-playing games.
EC: My cousin killed himself because of role-playing games.
OG: Jesus, what was he playing? Rifts?

Oooh. Good point! :D

I've never understood the collector mentality with the plastic miniatures. The entire point is they are plastic.. so theyre like.. cheap. Crap paint jobs, only worth a buck or two, really. And yet you see people buying and selling these things for lots of money.

I routinely repaint some of the plastic ones I have and it drives people around me nuts "you are going to ruin the collectors value!"-- (I repainted Raistlin, which was apparently ultra-rare or something- and my oldest kid uses it for his sorcerer). I don't even bother to do that great of a job with them, I admit.

I paint real miniatures as well- there's real artistry in some of those metal sculpts. I'm especially a fan of the Reapers- they are reliably cool, detailed pieces. I don't mind paying $3-6 for a signature piece. But I would draw the line at paying more than a buck or two for plastic. They are useful, and it helps to have a pile of em', but it just confuses me why people collect them.

That said, I have that ultra-limited Orcus still in the box. It was a gift.

This one?

So, maybe then folks would like to recommend their favorite beholder miniatures?

I thought they looked nice (albeit pricey).

Since I have long since been using a homemade beholder Xmas ornament (pipe cleaners ftw!), I passed.

I'm behind the times -- are there actually multiple types of beholders now, or is the variation just for ornamental purposes?

Simlasa

That's a big box for those four little guys.

Even in the 1e monster manual there was the beholder and the eye of the deep; the 4e monster manual has a couple different types.

Strange, most of the customers that browse those things at our store seem to love the little beasties.

Yeah, I really do think they look nice, but you sure do get ALOT of box, and just four miniatures, for what, $35?

I might just break down and buy a box when they go on remainder, like I did with alot of Wizkids' uber-miniatures.

Actually, I see one redeeming value to the set: if I was to actually buy these guys, I would repaint all of them, minus maybe the solid/fully painted one. Then I'd actually make some freaking beholders out of them.

...and the gorbel, the gas spore.. and in 2e the gauth, the beholderkin, etc.

Yeah, I knew about the monsters that looked vaguely like beholders but weren't... :D
