Title: D&D and Vampire having a date ?
Post by: silva on October 02, 2012, 03:44:30 PM
Have you guys noticed that there is a new generation of games lately meshing together "traditional" elements with "modern"/indie/story ones in a seamless (and apparently design-conscious) way ? Not pure physics/tactics simulators nor pure story/themes emulators, these games tend to be characterized by a solid "traditional" foundation with "modern" elements added in, in higher or lesser degree: The One Ring, Marvel Heroic Roleplaying, Tenra Bansho Zero, Apocalypse World, Leverage, Smallvile, Dr. Who, Freemarket, Technoir, etc.

If we consider the late traditional games as the children of D&D (D&D 4e, Runequest 6, Warhammer 40k, Shadowrun 4e, Eclipse Phase, Gurps 4e, OSR/retro-clones, etc) and the indie/story-games as the children of Vampire the Masquerade (Heroes Banner, Polaris, Houses of the Blooded, Dogs in the Vineyard, etc) then can we say that this new generation of games are the children of Vampire with D&D ?

P.S: I know Vampire is not a "indie" game per se, but I used it because, I think, it was the responsible for the initial "spark" that led to (or at least popularized) the story-focused trend that we see nowadays.
P.S²: I considered putting this thread in the default RPG area, but knowing the sensibilities of Pundit on the matter, it would be a waste of time, really. :)
