This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Has anyone played this one? The newer version, from Eagle Games, I mean?

Are both rules-sets good? How repetetive is the game over multiple plays? Is it a game like History of the World, where you can play it over and over again and it stays interesting?

I bought the new version of the game about 6 months ago and played it once with my brother (who had fond childhood memories of the old game) and some of his friends.  We played the "improved" version of the old rules, so I can't say anything about the more complex new ruleset that was included as well.  It was probably just as well that we played the simpler rules because more than one of the participants was stoned at the time...

Overall it was a fun game, but I am not sure the basic rules would have a large replay value.  It seemed like the game had a certain rythm of building and climatic battle that could get repetitive after a while.  I played Italia and had a fun challenge in shuttling back and forth to whack one opponent to the east and then another to the west, but the game came down to one big showdown.

The new rules looked more interesting for replay value, as they seem more political.  I didn't have a chance to do anything more than glance over them, however.

I would also say that the production values of the game are stunning!  The map is huge and gorgeous and the plastic pieces were very nice (especially the coins).  I would recommend it and had no regrets after buying it.

Hope that this helps.

As I think I wrote on your blog, Pundit, the one time I played the new rules I found them an odd mixture of German-style clever but non-emulative mechanics and emulative simulation. Result: the fiddliness of wargames and the thin facade of theme from German games.

I'd give the game another try if someone invited me to play it, but I wouldn't buy it based on the experience.

BTW, I enjoy HotW a lot, for whatever that's worth.
