This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Ghost Whistler

This is pretty popular still. I played it before; it's one of the few games my poor old pc can run. But I remember feeling it was a bit 2 dimensional and stopped after a while when my Tank (Tankh - an Egyptian warrior from the future, obviously) got to level 30 and the powers got a bit samey.

been thinking about playing this again. The mmo bug has bit me hard recently, but having tried star wars galaxies out (after 7 years) wasn't enough to quash it (andit's not without problems and considerable lag, for an old game).

So, and to the point, is it popular and played be people hereabouts? Or has it had its day?

I loved it for the short time I played it, mostly because the character creation is about the best I've ever seen - and of course, since I'm an altaholic, I had a ton of characters who barely ever made 20. :)

My main problem with it was finding people to group with for missions and such. The groups I did manage to hook up with were good, but it just took time to get enough to give anything major a shot. not sure how it is these days though.

Re: SWG - I was a day-one player, and loved it more than any other MMO I've ever tried - played it for hours a day, almost every day - until Sony started fucking with it. Because we all know the only reason to play Star Wars is to be a Jedi. From level 1. Who needs crafters or animal handlers?

It's all about the fun, after all.

I bailed just before the NGE and have sworn off any Sony games since then.

i seem to remember the instances (or whatever they arecalled) in CoH took fucking HOURS. Someone told me that they could average around 8 hours! That can't be right, but I tried one involve the Circle of Thorns that ended in failure and frustration after 3 hours!

Well, the larger ones did I guess. Again, not having gotten much past 20, most of the instances I did were fairly quick, actually; I'd say 30 minutes on average, if everyone stuck to the plan. :)

I've played COH for years now. Most instances do not take hours. Some Strikeforces/Taskforces do (fortunately if everyone is able you can take a break and come back to finish them.)

Admittedly with a BAD PUG they might take some time, but the longest I was in a single instance was an hour and a half. Some longer ones I've missed on my many many characters might exist but its unlikely. (I've got two 50's and a bunch in their 30+ range.)

Admittedly missions do get to be similar. Which I think is one reason the Mission Architect was created to let players try and vary it up a bit. Right now I'm burned out on MMO's. Yet there is still some fun to be had in COH, and I hope to get back to it in a future issue or three (or Going Rogue expansion.)

I still have an account though.

I used to have a ton of fun with it, but that was back when my wife was playing and I used to hang with some good folks from RPGnet. I love the costume designer. I don't love the grindiness. Ultimately, it's downfall is that playing a character from 2 to 16 or so is often the most fun. I became lackadaisical, and being in grad school, eventually absent.

I am not a big fan of paying for extra powerups, like the Ninja Run. Boo, hiss. It's already a subscription game, right?

I might be interested in getting together with some people from here once I get my thesis proposed in the next few weeks.

J Arcane

I always wind up getting bored with the repetition of the missions.  They're all the same after a while, just running through the same 3 maps over and over.

The architect thing sounds nifty, but not enough to pay for blind.  I'm waiting for the next free weekend.

I'm not currently playing any MMOs, having just weaned myself (again) from WoW, but I'd be glad to re-up my City of Heros/Villains for a month or so to run with you guys, if we decide we have nothing better to do. :)

Just installed the trial version and there's no UI. The only interface element is a tiny window reminding me this is a trial account and i can click on it to log out and go to the store to buy the game. If this is deliberate they can shove their game up their rogue isles.

The UI should still be there. That's odd. You might try and look up how to bring up the options window and adjust the options to show the UI on the Wiki.

I tried logging in again after searching around for keyboard shortcuts, but the game now wants to reinstall, claiming to be fixing the 'pigg/geom.pigg' files. I've given up for now. My internet speed is shit at night and i'm not leaving the damn thing running just to spend 5 hours downloading 3 gig again. Not a great start.

I recently stopped playing WOW and have been contemplating going back to COH/V.
It was the first MMO I ever played and had a great time running around with RL friends.
One thing I liked about the game was how, in general, folks seemed better behaved... friendlier. In WOW everyone was squabbling over loot and equipment... and that stuff doesn't seem to matter nearly as much in COH/V.
There also seems to be a lot less 'niche protection' in the design... we'd happily run into an instance without a dedicated healer or tank... so it was always easier to form a team.

I can't remember ANY instance/mission taking longer than an hour or so... depending on the team.
There were some COT caverns that we just couldn't beat with a specific team... we might have been too low powered. But none of the instances are that huge.
The special missions you can get from certain characters, that lock you into a group... and series of instances... those could take a while but you had days to get them done.

The architect stuff is fun, lots of quirky storylines... but COH/V still needs a lot more variety in the visual content... a lot of new NPC models and interior layouts would really spruce up the game for me.

Werekoala

I think the whole problem I had (and it may just have been my playstyle) is that once I hit 18 or so it seemed hard to get groups, and the difficulty for a solo hero made doing missions almost impossible - so I'd make a new hero and start at level 1 and run those sewers, baby! Lots of fun, every time, but again, hard to move up past 18 or so.

Except when they had the Invasions. Man alive, were those fun. A bit like watching a slide-show, but still - nifty!

That is not typical, I am sorry it is giving you a hard time.
(I've reinstalled the game twice in the last year, but admittedly I have a decent connection usually.)

I strongly encourage people to join SG's. Or even hookup with big cross server groups that have an SG on more than one server, this makes grouping easier. (A decent thing that came out of RPG.net was the RPG.net SG's for example. Still drama heavy sometimes, but I think that's people who play MMO's tendencies.)

"slide-show"... hah, that's funny.
But yeah, the invasions are fun.

In general I never had much of a problem getting groups in COH/V... maybe stuff has changed since I last played... probably over a year ago now.
I was in a supergroup but I don't recall grouping with them much, just using the base as a shortcut.
Whatever occasional drama I saw was FAR FAR LESS than what I saw in WOW.

There still a bunch of Taskforce missions I haven't done. Always harder to get a group for those. The one in the hollowed out volcano was great fun.
