There's a new FTP, PTW game on Steam called "Card Hunter" (apparently it's been around for awhile on mobile devices) that I'm really getting a kick out of "Card Hunter". It's a cross between deck-building games, turn-based combat, and board game. Actually it completely captures the feel of 4th Ed. D&D combat to me, which isn't all bad since this is the right platform for those type of mechanics. It also has a lot of the "Hackmaster" and "Knights of the Dinnertable" style of humor to it. Solo, or up to three players.
Recommended - I've played it for a few hours and will keep doing so. A nice diversion with some surprising complexity.
I enjoyed it for a while but like all "free to play" games it becomes a frustrating slog once you start hitting end game content unless you are willing to pull out the wallet and buy gear. It simply wasn't good enough to motivate that level of investment from me.
To each their own. I've got about 20 hours played so far without spending a penny, time well spent IMO.
Yeah, I played quite a bit of this, and didn't have to drop any cash on it (I did pay for the game initially, as part of the Humble Bundle card game bundle ... it probably cost me a dollar or two as a percentage of everything I picked up in the bundle).
