I'm getting back in a decade after swearing 'never again will :eek:GW get a dime from me" after losing my Skaven army that I'd built up since the days of Ral Partha in a move. But one of my regular rpg players is really keen on it and I've been once again seduced by the call of The Horned Rat. Picked up Isle of Blood and Deathmaster Snikch just for nostalgia's sake, and plan to pick up the Warp Lightning Cannon and the hamster Wheel of Doom in the next month. My friend is going with Vampire Counts and he has an old 1500 pt army of Dark Elves and my GF has expressed interest in High Elves because she's a big fan of the elves in LOTR ( and frankly looks like an elf, and that's me bragging not insulting). Don't know how much she'll enjoy playing, but I think she'll have fun painting. I'm also big on foam scenery and creating elaborate dioramas.

I'm going to attempt a close approximation, but with more battleground to play on and a gothic castle cut away on one side and an underground steampunk cutaway on the other side.

Anyways, will be playing 8th edition ( I last played 4th or 5th), and looking for any pointers, tactics, cool websites including tips for conversions and terrain ( I love the fact that units can now garrison buildings, look forward to trying it out), warnings, etc.

I only played it briefly before getting into Warmaster and then Epic: Armageddon.  After that, Warhammer feels to me like slow-moving barges gliding into one another, with a detailed simulation of the collision.  (Like Battletech with all assault mechs.)

That set looks amazing, though I've always felt these sets don't work well with the actual rules.  Sets like this seem better for more skirmishey games like 40k and their LOTR games.  What do you do with movement trays on all that lumpy ground?  I guess this is actually a diorama and not a battlefield.

I do occasionally if my friends want to.  I don't carry it in my store.  We have played a lot of Kings of War using our Warhammer collections.  As it turns out their strategy of shadowing GW's unit types is a real double edged sword that way.

Still, Kings of War, while clear, fast playing and fun (non of which Warhammer is anymore) it's got a few serious flaws relating to defending walls and buildings.  Missile fire is pretty weak as well.  But that's a matter of taste.

Warpath, Kings of War's much neglected sf brother is fantastic and a lot of fun to play.  I sure hope they leave the whole figure casualty removal and the alternating activation in the next edition.  It's a joy to play.

I just buy (tau) 40k figs because they look neat.

I used to buy WHFB figs to use in my D&D games but assembly and painting really sucked the utility out of it...and I bought lots and lots of them at once

I used to play a LOT of 40k (Nurgle and Battle Sisters). I gave up on the game maybe 8 years ago, though. Too expensive, and the rules kept changing every two years.

I wish I'd gotten a good selection of Empire figs, along with some of the monster figs. They would be awesome for rpg gaming.

Sisters of Battle got a horrible treatment from GW.  A complete retconning of them ala Squats would have been better.

Haven't played WFB in about 10 years. I got into 6th edition, around 2001 or 2002, and built up quite a few thousand points of Dwarfs. I was really more in to the painting and modelling side of the hobby than battling it out. Frankly, I was a terrible tactician, and inexperienced with WFB, and got spanked routinely. By 2004, I'd eBayed all of my Dwarfs.

I couldn't see myself getting back into it unless I was in a similar situation: friends who wanted to get into it, and had the money to back up their interest. That's not looking likely right now.

As it is, my wargame group have craptons of AT-43 - 5 large armies between three of us - and we haven't played it since 2010. Or met up in about a year.

I have the Island of Blood set and a bunch of Empire boxes, I just can't decide on a theme for my Empire guys so they never get painted.

I don't know how many miniatures I have, and I play wargames every weekend.  It just so happens that this season my club is right in the middle of a Warhammer Fantasy campaign.

If we went into tactical generalities, we'd be here all night long.  Do you have any specific questions about anything?

Other than that, check out Warseer.  There's a lot of hype about Bell of Lost Souls (and don't get me wrong, they are great), but Warseer is the descendant of Portent, the original GW discussion forums.

You can find all sorts of tactical discussion on those two boards.

Also, the new Stormvermin set is beyond awesome.  I don't even play Skaven, but I want a lot of those models.

That's terrible but the overall of what the SoB have suffered through at the hands of the 40k authors is just...ugh.

I used to play WFB, ages ago (3rd edition, maybe).

I have neither skill nor patience as a painter, so I would just cut out rectangular pieces of paper to represent various units, cutting off pieces as the units took damage. I'd write the key stats right on the paper; it was amazing how often the battles would go down to just a handful of units on one side (these were the days when a "human major hero" could still be beaten by a score of basic troops).

Anyway, the girlfriend came over, and saw all these slips of paper on the floor. She did me a favor, and collected them into a neat little pile.


So, not every battle went down to the last few troops.

I played dwarves years ago but my collecting/playstyle just didn't jive with how the game worked so it wasn't ever terribly fun.

Now of course I'm getting back into 40k (which I also used to play, Marines and Eldar). I'll give the game a to but honestly 90% of the fun for me is painting and collecting minis. I prefer historicals for playing, with Napoleon's Battles being my all time favorite game.
