This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I played the demo. Except for the gibberish spoken by the guides, I liked it. I'm actually going to get it, my first strategy game for the console.

I downloaded the demo when it first became available, but I still haven't tried it.  I'm scared I'll like it and end up needing to buy it.  :)

I really just don't see the point in buying the trimmed down console version when I've got a perfectly good PC install right at my desk.

The DS version could be kind of interesting if it's not too dumbed down, but really, I dno't see any use for the console form.

There isn't one. And as this thread is discussing the console versions...

Yeah. I really thought I'd only play strategy games on my PC. I've tried other strategy console game demos, but they've left me cold. Until now...

Civ Rev is it's own thing.
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

Only in the sense of how much modification had to be done to get it to fit on a console.

Modification from what? Civ Rev is it's own thing, perhaps you didn't understand this. It isn't Civ 4 lite.

I hear that the DS game runs the same mechanics as Civ Rev, just with 2d graphics.

I've played the demo, it was OK. It definitely got me interested in the
DS version of the game though!

As for why I didn't enjoy it, the controls for me were a little akward. I kept hitting the wrong buttons and closing/opening menus I didn't want to. Probably get's easier with practice, but I prefer my Console games a bit more pick up and play.

It came in the mail last night. I'm in the middle of Lost Odyssey, so I didn't plop it in yet.

I played the demo last night.  I was right.  Now I gotta have it.

I would love to see more strategy games on consoles; they are the only type of game I still play on a PC.  I had a bitch of a time trying to get Civ 4 to work on my machine, and even then it's without a number of the graphics options.  I'm just done with messing around with drivers, graphics cards, and all that crap.

That is one thing I like about my consoles: if I buy a game, it'll work.

I was part of a two man team with my buddy (who actually owns the PS3) playing quite a few games of it. To be honest, I wasn't much of a fan of it overall, but it wasn't terrible.

My main complaint is just that the game is so short. There are tons of win conditions, and it's easy to get a cultural victory especially. The world is small, the tech-trees can be blown through, and the epochs/eras change so fast that you can still have functioning legionary armies by the time you hit the modern era. There's no way to increase the size of the world or the # of opponents that we could find (if someone can find this, we'd appreciate the help). The computer opponents tend to focus on building military units to the detriment of science and industry (at least at the lower levels) which makes them tough opponents early on, but laughably easy in the end-game (where your tank armies are destroying their knights).

That said, there are some neat parts. Exploring and naming geographical features was cool. It's much harder to take cities in military conquest, which off-sets the small size of the world a little. The ability to make armies and the abilities and perks they get from experience are pretty cool. The early game, where you only have two or three cities and your opponents are just cranking out legionary armies to overrun your borders is frantic good fun. The fight animations are neat. The Figures of Note or whatever all have cool special abilities. The graphics are clean and good-looking.

I just found though, that the game didn't _gel_. Maybe I need to jump straight to the hardest difficulty (we were playing the bottom half of the difficulty settings, up to medium).
