This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

October. Whoot! Love dressing up and going door to door... Er... taking my kid door-to-door to get candy. Everything about October, the smells, the fun, the games, makes this one of my favorite months of the year.

Avalon Games has some things to pass out to the little kiddies, too....

GM TIPS

And here's a GM tip from me to make your game suitable for October: include a single element from a sci-fi thriller or horror movie. Nothing too obvious, but something that might introduce an element of fear or tension. If a player recognizes the movie element, give them a bonus. Some examples include:

-Strange Sirens, such as in The Time Machine. Nothing tenses me up more than hearing a siren that I don't recognize. To me it symbolizes a long-unused "special" siren that no one remembers the meaning to.

-Colors. Hues that are repetitive, like the red in The Sixth Sense or the color orientation in Inception. Whenever you give descriptions, nonchalantly throw in a color every once in a while. Make it seem haphazard, but whenever the players follow the leads of a certain color, they're heading in the right direction or something significant is about to change.

-Puppets. i.e. Killer Klowns from Outer Space or REPO! Well, or not so literal like in Puppet Masters or Independence Day... There are actually a lot of movies where a person is talking and it turns out that someone or something is making that person talk. In some movies the hand is literally stuffed into some body operating the mouth. In others, sensory tentacles are reanimating the person. Either way, it's really kinda creepy.

-I'm about to turn on the light, and.... Cringe-worthy moments when the characters are preparing to light up the room... and reveal a horrific THING in the corner. Pitch Black or Cloverfield are fine examples.

-Stuffed Animals with one real monster somewhere in the faces. A la any number of Jump-Out movies. Any player who doesn't immediately open fire into the closet full of cute toys deserves to get eaten.

See you next month, when we discuss ways to use leftover turkey in your games....
