This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Greetings!
I have now finished my game, Dark Sagas Fantasy Roleplaying!

There are four versions: The free no-art version, the full PDF version, a paperback version and the hardcover version. The free version can be downloaded from my blog (see the link below) and the other versions can be ordered from Lulu.com.
The paperback and hardcover will also be available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble within the next week.

Head over to my blog and download a copy of the free version of the game and see if you like it, there's also a character sheet available for download as well. (the free version contains the same text as the full version, it's just the art that is missing)

Why should we look at your game?

What makes Dark Sagas special?

Is there a setting? If so, why would it be worth playing?

Is it related to Iced Earth's album Dark Saga? If not, why? :)

Just being free isn't enough anymore. There are a gazillion free OSR games. Why is yours worth our time?

These are all good questions, including the one concerning the Iced Earth album:)
and I will try to answer these questions as soon as possible, but not today, it's bedtime where I live and writing while being tired aren't exactly the best way of making a convincing list or reasons on why you should try my game:)

I will get back to you as soon as I can!

All right, what is so special about Dark Sagas? Let's start with a short introduction to the game mechanics:

It's a game I wrote first and foremost for myself and my friends. It's a simple game with easy to learn mechanics; roll 2d6, add the relevant attribute and compare it to the target number set by the game master. There are eight attributes covering just about anything you want to do in the game.

A note about magic: magic in dark sagas is powerful but also risky, magical mishaps can be devastating and there's also a risk of being corrupted. As a magician you need to take this into consideration before casting your spells, recklessness can lead to corruption.

Dark Sagas is a game for those who like their setting but not the rules system they are currently using a wants to switch to a leaner system (but still having enough crunch to make characters intresting).

It is also a game for those who don't want a backpack full of rulebooks weighing a ton; Dark Sagas in printed form is in US Trade format (6 x 9 inches) and only 140 pages, of which the rules portion is just a small bit, the rest is filled with monsters (about 90 monster), game mastering tips, treasure tables, magic, Equipment and a small Campaign setting.

All you need is the rulebook, character sheets, six-sided Dice and pencils (and your imagination) and you're set to go.

Speaking for myself and my gaming group, we often go out and play outdoors, on the bus or train, in a coffeeshop, at the library, etc. and having a game with a short preparation time and not being heavy to carry around is just perfect for us.

Most OSR games are clones of D&D, which Dark Sagas is not. It gives a nod to Basic D&D but that's about it; the rules mechanic are based on 2d6, there are no levels, instead character Creation is more free form and there's always a chance of improvement after each session. Dark Sagas is more about emulating the atmosheric feel of old style gaming rather than the actual rules.

And as for your question about if there's a setting for Dark Sagas the answer is yes, there is indeed a setting, but it's not heavily attached to the rules, you can use any setting you like with ease. The setting is more of a sandbox for you to adapt in any way you like. There's a brief history of the World, some note's about the Cultures/races and about religion/gods. There's also a gazeteer describing the different areas/nations of the World, and last but not least - a hand drawn and painted map by me:)

As for your question if Dark Sagas is related to Iced Earth's album Dark Sagas, it is not, although I love Iced Earth:)

Finally, why would Dark Sagas be Worth your time? Well if you don't try anything, then how would you know if it's good or not?:)

Speaking for myself, I Always check out new games if they're free and if I like what I see then I will by a printed book (provided that there is a printed book to buy ofc:)).

Thanks you Spinachcat for asking these questions, I found them interesting and justified and it made me think a bit about having a sales pitch:)

Best regards, MH

You should probably mention that the game is licensed Creative Commons Non-Commercial.  Some people like that.

Good Point, thanks. I have mentioned it on Google+, Facebook and the official Dark Sagas site, just not here or at RPG.net :)

Hi again Dan!

I'm very interested in joining, however, 7-9 pm, assuming you mean CST and not CET, would mean that it is 2-4 AM where I live and since I work early during monday to friday it is somewhat problematic, but I'll work something out with my boss to take a day off at work, no problem, I'll just need to notify him in advance, so next week would probably work for me:)

Actually, I can sometimes manage a Q&A during the day (my time), if that would help.

When you get a chance, please stop by #rpgnet so that we can discuss it in realtime. :)

Also, are you on Facebook?
