The first public beta release of the Mythmagica RPG is available for download at legendaryquest.com (http://legendaryquest.com/Mythmagica.htm)!
Mythmagica is a Fantasy RPG inspired by the mythology and folklore of the European and Mediterranean arenas. It blends traditional tactical play with modern storytelling mechanics, using d20s for all rolls.
Mythmagica's most unique innovation is its Guts and Glory system. Guts is a conflicted resource that can turn a failed roll into a successful one. And, the more Guts spent, the greater the XP rewards. But, spending Guts is a gamble: the more Guts spent, the more severe the consequences if the character falls in battle. These range from brief incapacitation up to permanent character death.
The Overlord (Game Master) can throw hoards of monsters at the characters. But, spending Guts is always a player choice. So, a character cannot die without its player's implicit consent. As such, characters never die meaningless deaths. This lifts a heavy burden from the Overlord, allowing them to focus on designing encounters that make sense from a story perspective rather than worrying about TPKs.
Mythmagica consists of a Quickstart Guide, nine books, character sheets, and other game supplements, all of which are freely available for download here (http://legendaryquest.com/Mythmagica.htm). Aside from a few d20s and a pencil, this is everything you need to play.
Although Mythmagica is reasonably solid, the game is still in beta. As such, we welcome all feedback, both positive and negative.
Finally, Mythmagica is licensed under the recently released Text Liberation License (TLL), an open license balancing the needs of both homebrewers and publishers that you can download from Homebrew Avenue (http://homebrew-avenue.org). The core books have a Text Liberation Date that has already passed. As such, any game, adventure, or other work adopting the TLL can freely incorporate and/or modify their text.
