This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Fully crowdfunded in time for the holidays, the "Simulockrum, a Tabletop RPG Lockpicking Mini Game" is live on Kickstarter!

Lockpicking has been irrelevant for so long:

- Only rogues take the lockpicking skill.
- No other classes ever bother with it.
- Out of combat, you will obtain the best roll for it eventually.
- In combat, who wants to make a single pass/fail check every 15 minutes?

Imagine having a puzzle box with 16 possible magnet combinations and a set of lockpicks in your hand.  Now picture the rest of the party holding off an endless undead horde, while another character is deducing the right combination when it's not their turn through auditory and tactile sensations. Or do you prefer what we have now on round 1:  "I rolled a 32. Does that open the door?"

So how do you apply it in a game?  Roll in the 20s, get two tries at the combination, or three tries for the 30s.  Or use the number of successes on the dice. 

For traps, the DM may decide how many tries a character gets before a trap goes off.  The character can then expend one "attempt" to reset the trap clock.
