This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). Hello GamesCollective. :)

While what you have is not my cup of tea, I really appreciate how clearly your kickstarter page describes what you are aiming for and how the system works at a high level. And the artwork and maps you have on the site look very attractive.

Ok, so let's read the Kickstarter...

QuoteAwaken - A Dark Fantasy Tabletop RPG
Not a bad title, tells me it's Dark Fantasy.  Ok.

QuoteIn a ravaged land, you choose your destiny as a Vasalli, mighty heroes with a seed of darkness in their hearts.
Ok, starting to sound White Wolfish here.  Which isn't a good or bad thing in and of itself.

QuoteAwaken as a mighty Vasall in a world torn by dreadful forces and treacherous intrigues.
Ok, so Dark Fantasy White Wolf Supers, again not a bad thing.

QuoteWe are proud to present Awaken, a tabletop roleplaying game set in a dark, war-ravaged fantasy world heavily influenced by Slavic and Mediterranean folklore, where the forgotten mythologies have resurfaced as Vasalli, powerful humans gifted with abilities capable of changing the course of history.
Real world Slavic and Mediterranean, not Scandinavian, now this is personally more interesting I think, as it's rarer.

QuoteDark times have arrived for the denizens of the Alliance. Their trusted Colossi, guardians of the Great Cities, are slowly dying out. The monstrous Vargans, who once caused a war that nearly devastated the continent, still hide in the shadows of the underground. At the same time, strange nations from the North continue their incursions at a faster clip, all while the lords and leaders of the Alliance bicker over petty politics.

In such desperate times, the only possible torchbearers are the Vasalli, gifted people spoken of by the old mythologies. But can they bear the burden of being the protectors of humanity, or will they allow themselves to be corrupted by power and succumb to the darkness that delves in every heart?
Hmm, starting to sound like the Monster Manual is going to be filled with Mediterranean and Slavic monsters, but sounding more like loosely influenced or many inspired is closer to the mark.

QuoteExperience a story-driven game that emphasizes player interaction, immersive mood, and narration.

Play as Vasalli, powerful beings destined for greatness, and discover the secrets of your lineage—and your fate.

Enjoy the intuitive and light rules, which help you tell a story rather than burden you down.
And the wheels are launched off the wagon at relativistic speeds.

Would it really kill anyone if the title at the top was:
Awaken - A Dark Fantasy Storytelling RPG
or
Awaken - A Dark Fantasy Narrative RPG

All I know is...it would be a lot more, here comes the explosion...honest, and save people a whole lot of time.
Even the the "cutting edge" storygamers for all their talk of narrative, plot, and drama are fucking obsessed with the god damned rules they use. - Estar

Yes, Sean Connery\'s thumb does indeed do megadamage. - Spinachcat

Isuldur is a badass because he stopped Sauron with a broken sword, but Iluvatar is the badass because he stopped Sauron with a hobbit. -Malleus Arianorum

"Tangency Edition" D&D would have no classes or races, but 17 genders to choose from. -TristramEvans

I agree it sounds like a story game version of Vasalli: the Awakening with Eastern and Southern European folk-tale influences. If that's what the game is supposed to be, then they described it perfectly.

I often agree with you, but I find it hard to believe you spent "a whole lot of time" reading the blurb. The punch line showed up after just nine sentences. That didn't seem long to me. I kept reading even though I knew it was probably a no go once it sounded all White Wolf angsty which started in the first sentence "with a seed of darkness in their hearts", was reinforced by "treacherous intrigues" and "the lords and leaders of the Alliance bicker over petty politics",  and clinched with "will they allow themselves to be corrupted by power and succumb to the darkness that delves in every heart?".

Maybe the video is long, I don't know. I didn't bother watching since I got what I needed from the first ten sentences.

The Games Collective

Hello people!

Thanks for your comments and critique!

Of course, we understand perfectly that a game which can satisfy everyone can't be made :)
Just like any game creator, we created a game we'd like to bring  to existence and we'd like to play.

Regarding the PR blurb and title: Of course, any gamer with a lot of experience and history with games would really get nothing from these, since it's the core mechanics, core setting and atmosphere what's important to him/her.

Please, do remember - the campaign page is a Kickstarter page, and KS is not only a platform for backing of tabletop RPG-s.
So, that's why we included "tabletop rpg" in the title - to avoid confusing people ("is it a narrative video game? is it telltalle-like game? is it maybe combination of narrative adventure like "dear esther" and classic video rpg game like "baldur's gate"? )
I believe you can see our point :)

Anyway, of course, for those who want to get to the core, there is a quick-start edition available for download on the main page.
Of course, if people are turned off after reading the main campaign page, there's nothing we could do then.

Anyway, we've been funded and we're taking a long march towards the first stretch goal, we hope we'd at least have chance to offer hardback edition to people.
