Title: Woohoo!
Post by: KenHR on December 07, 2008, 02:50:39 PM
In the "not that anyone here cares" department....

My old band, the Same Four, have finally finished our CD.  While it led to the amicable dissolution of the band and involved a few compromises to save time and money, we stuck with this thing through to the end, and I just got the final mixes on the last two tracks via e-mail this morning.

This thing took up a majority of the year and nearly broke our bank accounts, but now we all have a nice, shiny coaster that we can really take pride in.

We just need to put the songs through mastering and send the package to press so we can inflict our noise on family and friends....

I'm just so excited that I had to share.  Carry on. :)

Wow! What kind of music, and what's your instrument? Got any songs for download?

Thanks, guys. :)

The music is sort of pop-psychedelic with a blues tinge.  My main axe is bass, though I played a bit of rhythm guitar on a couple tunes; right now I'm playing an Epi Jack Casady hollowbody through a SVT-4 head and a 4x10 Ampeg Classic cab.  One of the nice things about the recording process was the constant praise for my playing given me by our producer; he's offered to make me an on-call guy for sessions.  I've never really thought of myself as anything special on the instrument, but I idolize players like JPJ from Zep, Jack Casady, James Jamerson, Crimson-era John Wetton, Bootsy and the like, and try to get some of their spirit into my playing.  (Guitarists are a dime a dozen...a good bass player is gold, I say!)

Oh...and I sing...sort of, I think.  In a way.  The other guys made me do it.  I guess I hit the notes, so it's in tune, at least.

Since we're broken up, I'm not sure if we'll be putting the songs up anywhere, but I don't think the others would mind if I share.  I'll see if I can put them on a fileshare somewhere...I've already submitted my tunes for copyright, so I feel safe doing so, and our singer/rhythm guitarist is doing the same soon.  I'll let you know!

Okay, my two tracks from The Same Four are here: http://www.youshare.com/KenHR/a24975/DisplayAdvanced

I play rhythm guitar, bass and do vox on these.  I would put in Mike's (our main vocalist and songwriter) songs, too, but I don't want to do that without his permission.  I wish I had it, though, as I'm proud of a few of those bass lines and Mike's songs are catchier than mine (he sings better, too).

I also threw up mp3s I made from The Privileged Few here: http://www.youshare.com/KenHR/a24977/DisplayAdvanced

an old recording project with a friend of mine, Dale Haskell.  My friend Rebecca also contributed vocals to one tune.  This is transfers from old tape...I play bass and guitar to varying degrees on these (I'm not really a guitarist, as you'll see from my inept soloing); Dale (supremely talented) does the rest.  This stuff was recorded on a Tascam 4-track cassette deck with 3 SM-57s.  I only have a battered stereo mix on tape; Dale has the originals, and we haven't been in contact for a long time.  Sound is a bit hissy due to that.

I also threw up some demos here: http://www.youshare.com/KenHR/a24979/DisplayAdvanced

These are really rough.  Vox might be wavery (and, in the case of Spirit of the Times...sucks donkey balls; I'm re-writing...I still like the music, cornball as the main riff might be), guitar might not be great, MIDI might not be synced right in places, etc.

Anyway...be gentle.  I'm literally shaking nervous here putting this stuff out.  :)

EDIT: The titles in the demo folder are all screwed up. What's called Face the Corner is actually Spirit of the Times. The blank one is the demo Blueprints. The one called Blueprints is actually Face the Corner. Weird, gotta fix it...
