You have to pick one!

For me, it's a toss-up between Tom Baker, Christopher Eccleston, and Matt Smith. I like all three, but for different reasons. In a pinch, I'll have to choose my first, Tom Baker. Crazy bastard got me hooked on the show back when it was on regular TV in the 80s.

Mine was baker but I think tennent shows a wider emotional range and the family of blood and Blink are my two favorite episodes so tennent swings it. But I love Matt Smith as well.

I love Tom Baker's Who, but I picked Tennant because he's got a slide leg up on Baker for me due to the powerful scripts he's had at his disposal.

Jon Pertwee I liked alot. He had a nice mix of friendly and gruff. Followed by Tom Baker as he was on for so long and had more to do. A little too... odd at times. But still fun.

Eccleston was just kinda... there. Tennant just seemed to... holier than thou at times to the point it got annoying. Smith just didnt click for me so far. But only seen a handfull of episodes and the Death of the Doctor SJC ep so far so reserving opinion till see more of him.

And I'll toss in a vote for Sarah Jane as she got her own series. Twice!

I would have voted Tennant a year ago but while watching the crimson horror for some reason I shifted in favor of Matt Smith.

I first watched it under Troughton, but only for a few episodes, then saw most of Pertwee until Terror of the Autons (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terror_of_the_Autons) scared me when I went shopping and saw shop dummies with their hands off and the laser guns in their wrists, so I was banned from watching for a couple of months. Wikipedia says that it was deemed too scary for children and it was right (OK, I was seven at the time).

Then came Tom Baker who ruled the roost for years. He had the best companions as well - Sarah Jane Smith, Leela, K9, Romana and even Tegan.

Davidson was my Doctor. Still think he was the best-written one too, though my favourites ep is still Tomb of the Cybermen.

Grew up on Davidson and "the other" Baker but it was only really later after the show had been cancelled and we only had the video tapes to watch that i really got into the show enough to fully appreciate each doctors different style and persona, after this Tom Baker was the clear winner due entirely to the fact he has far more of the iconic tales when it comes to the doctor and his rogues gallery.

If i had a second choice though Colin Baker would win due entirely to that crazy coat and his darker more unpredictable doctor, you usually know where you are with doctors but his was the one that made you wonder why anyone ever traveled with him(my friend still claims perry only stayed as long as she did out of a mix of fear for his sanity and stockholm syndrome lol)

Pertwee.  Two Words: VENUSIAN KARATE!!!

(Actually I like Tom Baker best, but Pertwee was the only one who could actually fight worth a damn; not that I want the show to be about fighting, but it's nice for the doctor to have that tool in his belt)

I grew up watching Tom Baker.

Recently, I've been watching through the revived Doctor series with Tennant and Smith.

The Tennant series seem to be almost like a soap opera.

The Smith series 7 seems to be like watching a bunch of episodes which hit the reset button every week.  (I haven't watched through series 5 and 6 yet).

(I haven't watched the Eccelston series 1 yet).

I will credit a Baker-era comment from a book with part inspiration for my Deep Blue campaign -

"The sea is wide, Brigadier, but it is never empty".

The only time I've seen Pertwee on screen was in The Five Doctors. I suspect I'd like him a lot.

The two seconds I've seen of Capaldi, albeit in Leonevision, have me optimistic.

If we're talking just quality of performance, it's a toss-up between Tom Baker and any of the nuWho Doctors. Slight penalty to Matt Smith because (through no fault of his own) he's been struggling through some truly dire scripts compared to Eccleston and Tennant. Slight penalty to Eccleston for the brevity of his tenure.

Voted for Baker in the poll. The anniversary special reminded me just how fantastic he is, so he edges out Tennant. (Ask me tomorrow and I might flip back the other way.)

I'm fascinated that your opinion would shift like that during the absolute worst episode of nuWho. (It is, in fact, one of the worst episodes of television I have ever seen.)

I am not sure what response I can give that wouldn't lead us down the same road last time we spoke about this. I get it, you don't like the recent episodes and you think my taste is objectively terrible for liking them.

But to answer your question why my opinion shifted, it isnt anything the do with quality if that episode (though I did enjoy it). It had to do with the scene where he was overcome by the crimson horror, and in a wat, not the doctor. I don't know why, but him being in that state, clarified him as the doctor for me. No idea why I had that reaction.

Tennant, but is hard as Baker was my first Doctor, and I have grown very fond of Smith. Haven't watched the rest :)

Didn't read the thread but I'd say my Orthopedic surgeon, Dr Kim, since he did such an excellent job on my hip replacement in September.

Oh, THOSE doctors?

I like Eccleston, since he played a fine line between quirky joy and brooding despair.

Check out the movie "In the Loop"; he's the best part of the movie.

Eccleston because his run got me into Who (and I really liked all of his season).
Allthough I like Tennant lots as well, verrry strong 2nd place there.

Don't like Smith much.

Out of oldWho I've only seen a couple storylines with McCoy - Cold Light and the one with the sea vampires. Both of wich were very scary and good.

He played a pretty creepy Angel Islington in Neverwhere as well.

This is also the 2nd Doctor who first played another role in DrWho?
