An idea I had from another thread. Pretty simple. List suggestions of people you'd like to see join this forum. Who would make it interesting?
I'm going to start:
Dan Davenport
First, I just love his reviews. They are balanced, detailed and objective. This guy gives you a great idea of a game, even if you do not agree with his conclusions. I find he's a helpful reviewer and as a poster, I find him generally just as helpful and pleasant.
I'd like to see Dan, as well (for the same reasons that you mention and because he often serves as a voice of reason in #RPGnet).
I also wouldn't mind seeing former RPGenetter Justin Bacon (the only guy other than Dan whose reviews I read regularly).
And Gareth Skarka (this was a guy who I once traded threats of physical violence with via email, but after working with him at RPGNow and gettign some perspectiv on his personal life back in those days, I found him to be a really great guy who was merely going through a bad spell back in 2001-ish).
Finally, I'd like to see S. John Ross and/or Bruce Baugh join up, as they both have some unique insider perspective into how large/successful companies operate (and because I know that they would drive certain posters here crazy in very amusing ways).
[Edit: Almost everybody else that I have an interest in hearing from in the online RPG community already posts here.]
Calithena.
Quote from: droogCalithena.
Oooo. . . good call! Let me add Jurgen Hubert to my list, while I'm thinking about it (unless he already posts here).
(apologies for the BP bias, but thats where I came from)
Darth Tang. Not only does he have a fantastically detailed approach to RPG campaigns which I could never hope to emulate in a thousand years, his off topic stories are bloody interesting as well.
And he's a copper in Texas. I just wonder if he and Nox live in the same area(cue evil laughter).
Also SteveD and Bailywolf. Two of the most prolific RPG idea minds out there.
P.S. Jdrakeh - S.John Ross does post here.
TrippyHippy would no doubt add value, I'll add others as I think of them.
I doubt Dan would sadly, I think Bruce for all I personally value his contributions would be mad to.
The guy that springs to my mind is Paul Elliott (AKA Mithras), general historical gaming god, and (having gamed with him) a bloody nice bloke...
Likewise Thierry
Ron Edwards of course.
Also perhaps Mark Rein Hagen.
Quote from: StumpydaveDarth Tang. Not only does he have a fantastically detailed approach to RPG campaigns which I could never hope to emulate in a thousand years, his off topic stories are bloody interesting as well.
Ditto'd. He's a fantastic writer
Actually, Cessna...
No, hear me out.
Off list, and when not modding, he's a laid back, chilled kinda guy (having corresonded with him a little). I think he'd benefit from spending some time as 'just some poster on some message board.'
Of course, I can imagine a shitload of people with axes to grind making that a TAD difficult...:D
Quote from: FighterboyThe guy that springs to my mind is Paul Elliott (AKA Mithras), general historical gaming god, and (having gamed with him) a bloody nice bloke...
Also Third Level Fighter, unless of course you are Third Level Fighter, in which case welcome aboard :D
But yes, Mithras and Third Level Fighter would make great additions.
QuoteOf course, I can imagine a shitload of people with axes to grind making that a TAD difficult..
And they could be very right.
BTW, Cessna used to comment and frequent the Pundit´s, to "keep grounded".
I´m pretty sure he´s a Lurker here.
Dan Davenport, PaladinCA, & Bailywolf are all good ones. I'd also like to see Grubman, whom I believe someone said was scared off--true/false?
Malcolm Sheppard used to post here as Shooting Dice, it would be cool if he started posting here again. Malcolm, the "Frank Black" of rpg forums :D
Regards,
David R
Quote from: SettembriniAnd they could be very right.
I have no comment to make on that. :D Just think it would be interesting to see the guy as a poster and not a mod, with all the baggage that goes along with that.
Quote from: BalbinusAlso Third Level Fighter, unless of course you are Third Level Fighter, in which case welcome aboard :D
But yes, Mithras and Third Level Fighter would make great additions.
[Tears off mask] Yes, it is I!!! Bwahahahahah!
Thanks, nice to be here...might be wanting to pick your brains sometime soon Max, if Chaosium accept my monograph submission...
Wakshaani. The man is pure gold.
Quote from: JongWKWakshaani. The man is pure gold.
Oh hell yes. The finest example of a fun Tangency nut who is also a roleplayer with chops. Cessna-not-in-command is also a great pick.
BTW, S. John Ross has posted here at least once or twice. Grubman actually resurfaced after I said we probably scared him away, which pleases me to no end.
I'd also like to see Old Geezer as a regular. That guy is a direct line to the hidden secret origins of the hobby.
Tom Moldvay would be my number one pick, but he seems to keep the internet at arms length.
And I would very much like to get Brian Gleichman back, but I don't know how to keep him. Something about internet communication really gets his goat.

Firstly, I'll add my voice to the chorus of welcome, Dan! Your reviews are top notch and judging from a friend's experience you are reported to be a great guy.
Secondly, I really think that you should invite Cessna to post here, Ian. The few times I have interacted with him he has been a really decent sort. And as you say, being in an environment in which he doesn't have the task of moderating and just talk games might be a welcome change for him.
Here's hoping.

Cessna is indeed cool, but I fear he'd be given so much crap by people with an issue with him being a mod on rpg.net as to make it not worth his time, precisely the fear I have with Dan actually.
If we could avoid that then it would probably work.

Hello, Cessna. Glad to see you again.
If Darth Tang had the time, he'd be an awesome addition. I mean, the dude ran a Hackmaster campaign. He definitely has an appreciation for tradtional play.
And add me among those who find Cessna's presence a nice and hopeful thing. Head for the RPG forum and plan on ignoring 90% of what Nox has to say. It should be fun.
There goes the neighbourhood....

Not that I have anything against traditional play, I love it, but I'd just like to say I personally would welcome anyone who likes to roleplay. Whatever they use.
Doesn't make any difference to me if it's indie or mainstream, traditional or very experimental or anything in-between.
(Not saying it does for you but I personally felt like pointing that out explicitly)

Not so sure about the invitations, but as I recall, Captain Spaulding was the primary motivation for Cessna banning himself last year. Or rather, Cessna's poor taste in Cowboy Pudding led to the righteous indignation of the good Captain, and said righteous indignation was the proximate cause of Cessna banning himself... or something.

You're thinking of Curt the Hetrophobe, who I'm sure was the inspiration for a certain Little Britain character (http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/littlebritain/characters/daffyd.shtml)
I've never seen Capt Spaulding play the Gay Card on RPGNet. Furthermore, I've tabletop gamed with the good Catpain and he was a thoroughly decent bloke who didn't try and enforce a pro-gay agenda on us.
Although, I did find myself tapping my foot to a Scissor Sisters song a few weeks later, so you never know.... ;)

Quite. I had no intention of inviting someone who didn't actually play rpgs, who didn't have anything constructive to say about them, and who would show up just to stir up arguments where they didn't exist before. The Captain (Catpain?!?) is good people and really knows his gaming. However, he has his admitted personality conflicts with a certain prominent member of this site, which is as good a reason as any to demure.

Nah, the hard part is assigning blame. Is Cessna to blame for telling jokes that could be interpreted as being insensitive to gay posters...
Or is the Captain to blame for getting offended and making a stink.
The actual event was fairly clear cut and pretty much went down in one thread over about two or three pages.

By and large most folks are reasonable and articulate. On occasion Pundit and Gabriel will wax a tad vitriolic, but for the most part they're both measured in their speech. When they do get a bit extreme about you, make your response cool and informed, and they (sometimes) chill.
Dominous Nox is our problem child. Mention Evil Stevie in any fashion and you'll see why. Nox is capable of learning, but sometimes you've got to use a heavy club and put your back into it.
A thick skin and a ready sense of humor are needed here. Expect some to attack you. Most of us will go after your ideas, but not all will do so with any hint of respect or courtesy. Remember that you're dealing with the distancing caused by being on-line. None of the clues afforded by physical presence or even by hearing the speaker's voice in other words. I hope your participation on these boards is beneficial to all in some form or another.
The key to posting here is to remember that you can tell people to fuck off, and generally it will not be held over to the next thread.
That and people are expected to defend their ideas or if they can't be arsed to drop out of a discussion, both being fair responses really.

That's my interpretation as well. I hope you continue to post here Wakshaani. You're a cool person!
Nice one. :)
ps what happened with your presidential ambitions?

Well, I tend to not talk about it much, strangely enough. It just never comes up.
Lessee.
D&D 3.5, Shadowrun, Champions, and Torg are the biggies, but I also dip a toe into Werewolf, Gamma World, Noir, and a bunch of older stuff that's been sitting on a shelf, unloved, for years. (TMNT, I'm looking right at you.)
I've also done tabletop stuff for, man. Erm. Let's just say "Since teh 70's" and leave it at that. Battletech was the traditional big one, but these days it's mostly Warmachine, with both Warhammer 40K and Fantasy being active in the past.
I've kicked around writing stuff for pretty much all of the above, from an entire timeline reboot and storyline for Battletech to trying to do a city for Shadowrun to ... well, anything, really. I've teh terrible problem of being super-prolific but easily distracted by shiney objects and never *finish* anything.
Damn shame, as some of them I *really* need to.
Still hoping to be president, but, going smaller for now, shooting for city council next year. Our local state senator will be leaving office in five years, at which point teh current rep will try for her job. When he does, I'll be trying for *his* job. We'll see if anything comes of it.
Uhm.
I think that's it for now.
...
What *is* this place, anyway? Jong invited me and he drips with good Karma, so, here I am, but he kinda sorta neglected to tell me what the place was, so....

Uh... caveat emptor? :D
At its heart, theRPGsite is a gaming forum, with a strong focus on "traditional" or "old-school" games, and very light moderation--with all that this can mean. There are lots of people you will like (including many familiar faces), and some that you probably won't (ditto). Don't let the latter discourage you, though. :)
Again, good to have you here.

Dude. It's my new hang.

Roleplaying never comes up on rpg.net?
We must have gone to different rpg.nets.

It's a place where we talk about rpgs. Those who post only in Off-Topic will no doubt be mocked ruthlessly. I look forward to it :p

We talk about RPGs and apparently about the volume/taste of semen.

Zomben, who just got banned from rpg.net but would fit in well here.
I just emailed him to invite him :)

And this is why I have a shrine to you in my flat.
By the way, Emma and I are hoping to be in Madrid around the middle of April, are you?

I will be around here with a 90% chance. Drop me an email with the dates if visiting so we can arrange something.

Yes! Get the man over here! Zomben would be a great addition to the forums (as an aside, what was he banned for?).

In short?
Called someone on perceived and likely bullshit, then back-talked the mods.
He'd be perfect here.

Must have been some major bs, he always seemed pretty even going to me as well. Hopefully he will stop by soon and enjoy the place.
Somebody was being a dick, he gave them a deserved kicking, got a mod warning and rather unwisely dared them to ban him. They did for a month, so he PMed them and told them to permaban him, so they did.
I think it was a last straw thing, my impression was he was just tired of the moderation which is partly why I thought he'd be happier here.

So. . . when did they flip-flop on their official "We don't ban by request" position?
Quote from: jdrakehSo. . . when did they flip-flop on their official "We don't ban by request" position?
I have a feeling that it's not what you say, but how you say it.
Quote from: zomben, over yonderI'm tired of this pissy-ass shit on RPG.net where some asshole can come along and fling crap around, but nobody's allowed to call them on their crap without fearing the Mods.
might be construed as the kind of request the mods enjoy fulfilling.
Quote from: jdrakehSo. . . when did they flip-flop on their official "We don't ban by request" position?
Well, that's basically about people saying "I'm too addicted to RPG.net, but now I have exams coming up, so please ban me for two weeks, so I don't get sucked back in".
Not about people saying "Ban me if you dare mods, fuck you, I hate you all, I don't want to see your ****ing site ever again". They have been pretty consistent about banning people for that.
I thought it was a pretty insignificant thing to get so worked up over, but hey, if he felt it was worth it, more power to him. And the mods did warn the one he attacked as well, so I don't know why he felt the urge to attack again. Too bad, but if he's happier elsewhere, so be it.
I do like his sense of humour, though. Before being banned he managed to quickly change his location to "not on RPG.net, that's for sure..."
If Wak starts throwing 'tehs' around on here, i may just have to kill the bastard. :pimpdahoe:

The Wak has big hands, and types at an angle, or so the story goes.
It's not like he's that celebrity whateverthefuck douche from the posters thread who does it intentionally. Fucking btards.
Sorry, what were we talking about?
Has anyone considered that Zomben might just be transitioning to a Mod's position over the tBp? :D
I'd love to see SMURF on here - from the SJG forums. He and I may disagree on politics and economic systems greatly - but he is REALLY into gaming, good movies and History.
You might even say he is my favorite socialist.
He and I used to have some pretty heated sparring matches about politics...then I discovered we tended to like the same movies. He then started sending me private mails that had NPC ideas for me.
Turned out to be a decent sort that I think I could game with at a table or even buy a beer for him.

One of the great ironies of life that I think probably generally merits more reflection by all of us, is how often people who believe things we find politically insane or repugnant are ok sorts with whom one could happily share a pint.

Believe me, if I had a choice, I'd never type it out.
Damn thing's haunted me for over a decade, now.
Gamergirl from the SJG forums might be fun to have on here.
She also has an "over-love" of classic TRAVELLER and she likes original Star Trek quite a bit. She also nplays Rock & Roll guitar.
Maybe you guys think we have too many of those on here already?
Also Dan Howard - he know his history about ancient armor.
- Ed C.
Quote from: Consonant DudeAn idea I had from another thread.
Was gonna say, the guys from evil hat, john wick, etc,
But I like this one more lol, Dan does the best reviews
