I'm trying to think of something in Star Wars that might be researched by the time of the end of the Skywalker Saga.
I was told on another site that technology only gets refined or bigger/smaller in Star Wars; but I refuse to believe it. I believe what Stiegler said. Technology never stops advancing. I've been playing with a lot of ideas but none fits in my mind for Star Wars. Teleportation, time travel and matter replication seem like the obvious next steps for technology but I feel that those techs would be too much of a game changer. Teleportation would eliminate space travel, time travel would be EXTREMELY dangerous if it fell into the wrong hands and matter replicators would make Star Wars a post-scarcity society which I DON'T want.
The obvious answer seems to be nanotech or tech that goes even smaller like Picotech or Femtotech. Yet nanotech is emerging in the world (late 2019) and I'm sure that Star Wars has nanotech everywhere; so much so that it doesn't even faze people anymore. The absence of teleportation, time travel and matter replication leads me to conclude that they simply cannot be done by their laws of science since all 3 are things all intelligent life forms would think to want to create. I myself also feel anything smaller than nano is impossible so that rules out pico and femto Tech.
I'm getting ready to give up and except their are only so many ideas that people can come up with and perhaps I exhausted them all. UNLESS......
Does anybody have an idea for an emerging tech in the Star Wars world that isn't time travel, teleportation, matter replication or pico/femtotech?
Sex droids. They would change everything and nothing at the same time.
Terraforming? I mean almost instantly turn a toxic world into one where people can live.

Imagine if they could even manage to make more than one environment on a planet. Forests and swamps and deserts and tundra all on one world? Madness!

So, first of all, I'd look at precedents. The original trilogy concerned emerging technology to create moving space stations of unprecedented size and firepower. The Death Stars were technology that was surprising and hadn't been seen before. It seems like the clone army was something new to the Republic in the prequels, and the hyperspace tracker was new technology in the latest trilogy.
I think under different hands, a different Star Wars series might focus on other new technologies. I can picture some:
* Expanded use of personal shields, giving rise to duels like in Dune rather than lightsaber battles.
* Powered armor technology might also come in and fit with pulp themes.
* Cloaking devices were mentioned but rarely seen - expanding those could change things.
Just a few examples that sprang to mind for me.

Personal Energy Shields were fairly common during the Old Republic, which had the effect of limiting blaster weapons for more melee combat. Since the primary users were soldiers and one side demilitarized after destroying the other, it's a lost technology.
Powered armor is a distinct possibility.
There are two types of cloaking technologies in Star Wars. One was used by Grand Admiral Thrawn, and blinded the ship that used it while making it invisible and undetectable by sensors. The other worked like a Star Trek cloak but required a rare element found only one planet in the galaxy, because of course it fucking did.
I shifted gears. I was wondering if you could help me with something. Over the last few months, I've been editing the "List of hypothetical technologies" page on Wikipedia. I am terrible at picking so I was wondering if you could choose something from the list that could fit well in Star Wars. It's ok if you pick more than one.
I'm looking for something
-Hasn't appeared in Star Wars (as far as you know)
-Something that would not contradict the Force
-Something that would not be crazy expensive and resource consuming (I say this because many megastructures are on the list)
-Something that would not change EVERYTHING
-Something worth doing
Some of them already appear in Star Wars or don't apply to that universe. Filter through them
Here's the link to the list

Thanks so much!!!!

Hard light holograms. We know they have the tech for both, why not combine it?
Something to keep in mind is that in the SW backstory history there have been several rises and falls of super-science civilizations. Tech gets lost on a regular basis and then re-discovered. You can lay very good odds that anything the Force doesnt like gets un-discovered sooner or later.
Along the way in various books and sources just about every tech imaginable has been introduced in some format.
Giant matter replicators? Check. destroyed
Nanites? Check, and posing such a threat that the Force itself had the thing sectioned off in a huge quadrant of the galaxy it has utterly ruined.
Portal Gates? Check, lost, rediscovered, lost again.
Liquid Metal style nanites? Check.
Alternative FTL drives? Check. Lost, rediscovered, so far kept secret or lost again.
and those are just the ones I recall from various sources.

I SO agree with you. I remember the Hypergates but could you clarify on the other stuff. It doesn't ring a bell. If you can't remember it's cool. Thanks!!!!
The nanites/liquid metal stuff was if I recall right some sort of malevolence that had devastated half the galaxy which was now effectively walled off by the Force so it could not spread.
Alternate FTL drives. One of the precursor races came up with a sort of solar sail that was moved by an as yet unkown own FTL radiance. Tachyons? Not sure. But it was that Count Doukou's solar sail used after he discovered the tech in some ruins while exploring the unknown regions. There was another that I am not sure if was explained but it used a FTL drive that was faster and safer than standard drives. Also from a precursor race.
The giant matter replicator was yet another precursor race creation. I believe, but am not positive, that the StarForge in KOTR was one. Or close enough considering the speed it could fabricate ships.

Oh yes the Mgnal-Mgnal.
Thanks!
There was also a race that, to escape some interstellar menace, devolved themselves, and centuries later an event triggered their re-evolution. Genetic manipulation on a very fine scale. From the old Lando Calrissian books.
I could see AT-AT's evolving into mecha.

um... you havent actually watched Star Wars then or seen many mecha shows?

Not really (mecha shows) as I can't stand mecha. AT-ATs resemble mechanical animals, so it wouldn't be too far of a stretch to create anthropomorphic vehicles.
Or is that wrong?

Next we get the Death Star/Unicron transformer.
I was thinking something like this:

But Unicorn Death Stars works.
If we're including the EU - the Old Republic had a lot of this lost tech that came from civilizations that were vastly more powerful, even *extra-dimensional* that fell into darkness...
The Rakata (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Rakata)and the their Infinite Empire were terrfyingly powerful.
The Gree (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Gree_Enclave/Legends)- They invented hypergates, and later there is evidence they were extradimensional refugees hiding from Elder things... (which in SWTOR you have to actually deal with - pretty hardcore.)
But yeah there's a lot of the tech mentioned upthread that come from these two races in particular: hypergates, terraforming, cloning tech.
The old Hutt Empire had what is clearly super-Mechs powered by a rare isotope that is no longer available. Personal shields are still a thing - they're in the new FFG Star Wars game in fact. Quite nice. But rare.

The lack of billboards, ads and badging in the Star Wars universe is one of its defining visual cues. It helps it look clean and sleek even if everything is beat up. Though they did flirt with the idea a bit in the prequels. The problem is, by then floating billboards had become a visual signature of Blade Runner and the movies that followed it.
I remember one of the Brian Daley Han Solo novels had a beverage bottle with holograms and/or moving video on it.
They did a bit more with the "Holonet" in Star Wars Rebels. It played the role of CNN when they needed a newscast to deliver exposition.
