Title: What are you watching?
Post by: Serious Paul on January 17, 2007, 09:15:02 PM
Okay we've had a recent what are you reading thread, and now I am going to ask what you are watching. See I have a lot of free time on my hands of late, so I've downloaded a lot of "must see tv", well at least according to friends.

Currently I am watching:

The Unit (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/the_unit/), Heroes (http://www.nbc.com/Heroes/), Sleeper Cell (http://www.sho.com/site/sleepercell/home.do), I just started the The first season of the Wire (http://www.hbo.com/thewire/?ntrack_para1=leftnav_category0_show4), Battlestar (http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/) and Lost (http://abc.go.com/primetime/lost/index).

I am also catching parts of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

What are you watching?

Heroes is very cool.

I'm also watching Dr.Who (and watched the pilot of the Sarah Jane Adventures, but have given up totally on Torchwood), and I'm drooling over the second season of HBO's Rome.

Between a few TiVo subscriptions and quite a lot more sets of series DVDs that fill out my Netflix and GreenCine lists, I am watching:  Naruto, Dr. Who, Dead Zone, Veronica Mars, Battlestar Galactica, Full Metal Panic and Fullmetal Alchemist, Great Teacher Onizuka and Kino's Journey.

I should really get into Heroes, everyone tells me so ... but it'll still be cool when I can gulp it down in four-episode DVD swallows, so it's hard to motivate for weekly installments.  I'm so lazy :D

Which reminds me, time to catch up on that. Season 1 was great.

I also follow Deadwood.

Me and my wife have a lot of shows we watch regularly, but there's rarely more than one or two on the air at a time: Rome, Dr. Who, Torchwood, The Shield, The 4400, Heroes.

I'm also watching William Hartnell as Dr. Who on video. For the uninitiated, he's the first Doctor from 1963. At the point I'm at in the show he still hasn't been revealed as a Time Lord. Funnily enough, in one of the episodes the Daleks even had a time machine of their own incredibly similar to the Tardis but in cmoplete working order. I'll move on to Patrick Troughton next, and am working on my Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker collection.

Been watching Justice League too. Definitely cool for a TV cartoon. At one point Darkseid has just stomped on Superman's face and is standing on it. to get him off Superman burns a hole through his foot. And all through the episode Supes is trying to kill Darkseid.

I watched Deadwood for the first two seasons but haven't gotten to watch season 3 yet. It's on my todo list.

I caught the first two seasons of Justice League Unlimited.

Loved it. Best. Cartoon. Ever.

Wishing that the SFC would get more Dr. Who eps and hoping that cartoon network gets the third gig of GitS: SAC.

My wife and I have extremely different tastes in tv, which means that I'm forced to sit through everything she watches as "together time."

Her shows:
the full brace of CSI's, ER, Without a Trace, Desperate Housewives, Cold Case, Ghost Whisperer, Numbers, and probably a few more that I'm forgetting.

My shows:
The Daily Show, Battlestar Galactica, 22nd Century (on PBS), Studio 60, Supernatural, Smallville, Afrosamurai. I watch the 4400 and most of the other shows listed, too, but they're in hiatus so I didn't mention them specifically.

Yeah I don't own a television, so I download my TV. So in the cases of shows like Buffy, I've downloaded like three or four seasons at a time. BSG I like enough to stay week to with it, but not many others.

Just finished "GBH", currently watching "Allo, Allo" series three, "I, Claudius" and probably shortly "CSI" series five.

Mostly I watch stuff on DVD, as the above probably implies.

Yes, I live in TV hell. I think she thinks the same when I watch my shows.:D

I somehow totally forgot BSG.

I also plan on watching The Dresden Files on the off chance it's a cool show. The Lost Room miniseries was goos, and if they make it a series I'll watch it too. Basically the Sci-Fi Channel is do much better than it used to. Odd that it started shortly after they changed their primary focus from horror to sci-fi. :)

Did I mention The Shield? Of all the shows I watch it's my favorite. Shortly after I bought the first season I loaned it out to four people in turn. Each one sat down to watch the first episode with no expectations other than me telling them how badass the show was. They all finished the entire first season in marathons only broken up by work or gaming.

It's just that good.

I can't say that I'm going out of my way to watch anything on telly at the moment though I am watching the first season of The Muppets on DVD and I'm waiting for the second half of the first season of Supernatural to come through.

I bought season 3 and 4 of Knight Rider, the 7 season set of Star Trek: TNG, the ST: TAS box set, and completed my DVD set of Gundam Seed.  So, I'm bouncing around through episodes of all of those.

I haven't watched actual broadcast TV in 5 years.

Quote from: James McMurrayDid I mention The Shield? Of all the shows I watch it's my favorite.

You are a man of discerning taste. Well done!

Here's my top 10 (currently in production) TV shows list

1.  Prison Break (Interesting characters, how are they going to keep this up?)
2.  My Name is Earl (Surprisingly funny red-neckian comedy)
3.  The Wire (Best. Police. Show. Evar.)
4.  Doctor Who (Loved Eccleston, Warming to Tennant)
5.  Battlestar Galactica (Good to Great, but Cylon "culture" is beginning to bore me)
6.  The Office (Not better than the original, but finding a place of its own)
7.  The Shield (Second. Best. Police. Show. Evar)
8.  Day Break (Ok, I'm cheating...I did think it had promise)
9.  Lost (At the end of season 1, this would have been 1, At the end of season 2, it was probably at 3-4....This show is sliding down the top 10 moutain...enough with the fucking flashbacks get on with it)
10.Heroes (Good, this show would rocket up this list if they ditched the Ali Larter/Two-Face chick and her wunderkind.)

Other shows (that are barely hanging on)

11.  Torchwood (The Hi-C drink box version of Doctor Who.  Uh, remind me again what does this show have to do with Doctor Who?  Oh yeah, big war coming...or something....It's ok but my wife loves it)
12.  Sarah Jane Adventures (Uh...probably cool for kids....I can't see myself continuing to tune in)
13.  CSI: Whereverthefuck (I'm down to 1 (from 3) Las Vegas, and when the ditch Gil, I'll probably jettison that one too...Yippie!)
14.  30 Rock (Trying to be funny.....but.....not)
15.  24  (Why the fuck am I still watching this show...Oh yeah, Jack shoots innocents in the leg/arm/other appendage to get bad guys to talk)

Shows that have been thrown off the cliff

16.  House (Patient presents bizarre symptoms is referred to House.  Try something, patient gets worse.  People doubt House.  Try something else, patient gets better.  The End. Lather. Rinse. Repeat)
17.  Medium (Started off fun...now I'm bored).

Oh right!  The kids shows!  I completely forgot!  And I go to such lengths to find shows that I can tolerate watching, and exclude the (many) shows that the boys would love at the expense of my sanity.

Kim Possible these days ... My Life as a Teenage Robot before that, and Powerpuff Girls before that.  My wife's comment was "If the boys grow up believing that only girls can be super-heroes you'll have nobody but yourself to blame."

Captain Jack disappearing and TARDIS sounds in the background, so it looks like they're doing more Doctor Who tie-ins in the next season. Either that or Jack jumped ship and goes back to the Doctor, leaving Torchwood to plummet in the ratings and eventually spiral into nothingness.

I like his character portrayal on Doctor Who better than on Torchwood...

Me too. Captain Jack on Torchwood falls into that (IMO moronic) idea of a "woe is me, I'm immortal" character. Captain Jack on Doctor Who would be all over it, and finding ways to use it to get laid.

While I enjoy Torchwood, I like my "Doctor Who Universe" lighter...a la...go figure...Doctor Who.

Bears winning the NFC Championship...

The Wire - I'm surprised for all the good taste here, nobody has it.
CSI - Vegas; the others only if nothing is on and the TiVo is out of good stuff. Even then, NOT MIAMI.
Criminal Minds
The Doctor (you know who)
Heroes
BSG
Tivo's been picking up Xfiles - always fun to revist.
I still have the last 4 episodes of The Sopranos to get to...
TiVo's been picking up lot's of great old movies - Rear Window, Charade, etc.
NCIS
I should really do this while in front of my TiVo so I could just look at the Season Pass Manager...

My apologies, gentlemen...I must have crossed eyes reading through the lists...I've seen The Wire called the best show on TV, and I have to agree.  It's been great since the beginning.

Criminal Minds is a CBS show with Many Patinkin as the lead of an FBI behavioral analysis unit (BAU) - essentially profilers. They go around solving cases based on information they put together about the crime and based on the profiles they build from that.

One of my top 5 for this year, I'd say.

I have only seen six episodes, so bear with me: My brief synopsis is it is a grittier version of Law and Order that focuses only on the cops. Very realistic, and feels a little like what the Shield would feel on HBO.

True about the grit, however a large appeal of the show to me is that is also focuses on the criminals.  So an episode might bounce back and forth between the cops tracking down leads on a John Doe killed in the drug zone, and then bounce to the drug dealers/gangs trying to expand their territory, etc. etc.

So it really shows the same story from at least 2 different angles (a third angle would be how the city politics affect crimefighting decisions).

A really good show, with some really interesting, believable characters.

Yeah, and they just keep expanding on the relationships and complexities of the problems they uncover in the first season.  I don't want to spoil it for Paul, but it does add even more points of view - kids coming up through the system; politicians running for office locally, statewide, and even national.

And Paul - it only gets better, IMHO.

BTW - Add Earl to my list as well. And how could I forget Monk, and Psych, Without a Trace, Eureka (a great SFC addition, hope it continues!), The 4400.

It's actually a good time for TV in my opinion.

And Tivo is, as I type, recording To Catch a Thief.  I think this machine is really starting to get me...

We're about 3 shows into the 2nd season of LOST and going... "Oh, no... this is going to suck, isn't it?"

The first season was soo good, and from the first ep of the 2nd season, we were disappointed with the "frame in a frame" flashbacks (flashing back to things we'd seen happen in the "now" rather than "past history/character building".) It seems sometimes like the whole show has merged with the flash-frame "Previously on Lost" segue introduction.

I'm still intrigued, but... less than I was during Season One. I'm hoping it doesn't peter out completely.

Does anyone know, was there a change of writers or something between Season One and Two?

I am currently on Season 2 of Oz, which is sort of interesting for me to watch-given my line of work. I am also on the third season of Buffyt he Vampire Slayer, and the first season of Angel.

I finished both season of Rome, and have to say over all I walked away pleased. I also finished the second season of Sleeper Cell, which was good-but not as good as the first season was. Still it ended in a way that was pretty unexpected which was nice.

On the recommendation of a friend I caught all of the first season of Dexter, which was very good.

So what's currently on your plate folks?

Welcome to the NHK
Black Lagoon
Code Geass

Right now there's not much good on in the way of free downloads. Or if there is I haven't seen it yet. Claymore gets good a couple episodes in, but it's got a slowish (two or three episodes) start and a soundtrack that's hard to get used to.

On television, I'm mostly just waiting for Heroes to come back on.
