There are times I REALLY like this site.

 Today is a good time.

Tomorrow maybe not so much .

 But today is good.

So ....anywaay....,

It was seeing this thread over on the Big Purple that inspired my original above post:  http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?t=346459

Just reading the responses and thinking , First: "Damn that post looks real familiar..." THEN, "What the f....? The guy doesn't realize that I'm on BOTH forums or that Qoltar rhymes with Koltar ??". Then find myself thinking "Hhhmmm the people on rpg.site had much more intelligent questions and comments about the chart than the rpg.netters do" .

This is not a "bash". Just found it interesting the diifference in responses and reactions to a simple monthly retailer survey.

Also, some of those on the Big Purple are very "precious" about their games and seem offended or hurt that their games didn't make a better showing in the month of May.
Heck, last year around October or November GURPS disappeared off the list entirely - then it shows up aggain on it sometime in February and gradually stayed on till it was in the top 5 for 3 or 4 months straight.
I didn't "panic" or anything - I knew it was more of a crowd response to what was being released out there.

You guys on here impressed me with a flood of reasonable , intelligent  and common sense type questions related to the chart . Hope I answered them all adequately up in the role-playing section.

Want me to post next month's when it comes out ? Or just put another post in the same thread ??

I think it would be better to use a separate thread. I mean we have the space right?

Maybe I will.

Its going to be a month from last week .  I'll see what the other people say too.

In fact if there is a way to do it maybe you and the boards administrators could find a way to keep a running tab on this.

This is a very good idea which i totally support. There hasn't been nearly enough hard numbers on this subject.

I'll bash, because the majority of the responses I read became:

"Since the survey does not coincide with my preconcieved notions of what the sales figures should really be, I will declare them incorrect and assume that the survey takers were part of an agenda driven conspiracy to misinform gamers and retailers."

A lot of posters decided that since their Favorite Game System wasn't higher in the survey, that the survey had to be wrong. Not very intellectually honest, that.

That's rpg.net. They have more posters than us, so their thinking more closely follows crowd thinking, which is, "my personal perceptions are more valid than any actual data". Note that they question the assumptions behind any survey or study, but never question their own assumptions. Apparently, only scientists and industry magazines have biases, not random guys on the internet ;)

Interestingly, none of the rpgnetters drew the obvious conclusion that the industry and hobby are hardly dying if 1,000 stores are selling 60 game books a month each. That's got to be quite a few game groups. But then, rpg.net has always been about "the industry is dying!" so anything which shows different will be ignored. That's the crowd thinking again.

I don't thnk it's just TBP... most places think not only is the industry dying, but it's online retailers that are causing it (because a LGS closes). Which really pisses me off.

Our LGS closed about a month after Rattlehead Games started. And the owner had announced before that.

Shewolf,

A suggestion : Do you have any like-mnded friends that might want to invest in starting a game store with you ?

Know of at least 4 people online who have told me they thought abnout starting game stores. So far , I don't hink they have opened one yet.  I keep hoping I'll chat with someone who starts one up . It would be interesting.

Sadly, no. But if things keep improving the way they are (this is our 2nd year and we're so far in the black!) in 3-4 years we'll have the funding to start a physical location. which means we'll be able to carry some lines that don't sell to online retailers. Like WOTC.

Koltar, if you're willing to post regular updates about the statistics from game sales, I'd gladly make a sticky thread for you to do it in on the main forum.

That sounds good.

If there are certain rules you want me to follow - could you send me a PM?

Mind you I can't give specific numbers from my store because of job reasons - but numbers we get from industry sources I'm willing to passon. There seem to be at 10 to 15 people on here that are into the design, authoring of  or distrubution of games.

No specific rules, just that each month you post an update with the current rankings (its once a month you get them, right?).

As to not clutter the actual postings thanks Koltar. I'll be interested in seeing what some of this looks like.
