the wife's been out of town the last couple of days to visit her family over Thanksgiving giving me a chance to watch some stuff she may not have found to be that interesting.
1) Secret Agent X-9, 1947, Lloyd Bridges, Keye Luke, 13 part serial (runtime about 4 1/2 hours) takes place on the only neutral territory in the far east during WW2. fun plot and a quirky cast that keeps it going. an accidental discovery of a synthetic aircraft fuel by the Japanese threatens to change the course of the war, but they don't have the full recipe. 8/10
2) Dick Tracy meets Gruesome, 1947, Ralph Byrd, Boris Karloff (runtime 66 min) another fun oldie, with some pretty good gags, plenty of action and an interesting plot. A gas is developed that will paralyze its victims for about 15 minutes, perfect for robbing a bank. 8/10
3) The amazing transparent man, 1959, (runtime 58 minutes) Joey Faust (a safe-cracker) was sprung from prison, for the purpose of making him invisible so he can steal radioactive materials, but the Joey has other ideas. 6/10
Interesting. Me, I just dug out my ten seasons of Stargate SG-1 from one of my many boxes. Given how much time I've spent in the last week watching clips on Youtube, I'd be well done with Season 1 and probably a goodly way through season 2 already.
Betcha that takes more than a week, tho....
I have the Dick Tracy movie and the serial on DVD. And they used to play regularly on one TV station way back that hosted various serials.
Personal favourites are...
Flash Gordon: 1936: This one is alot of fun and the characters are all interesting. Ming is particularly fun as a villain and Buster Crabbe makes for a great Flash. The other two serials are good as well. Though the last one falters here and there.
Buck Rogers: 1939: Not bad. But it has some flaws in pacing. Otherwise some nice effects and overall good characters. Buster Crabbe again. Bemusingly in the Buck Rogers TV series he shows up as Brigadier Gordon, a retired pilot.
The Green Hornet: 1940. Also with Keye Luke as Kato. Fairly well done too.
Spy Smasher: 1942. Based on the character from Fawcett comics. This one is fun and takes a few odd turns along the way.
Mysterious Doctor Satan:1940. Featuring an interesting hero called the Copperhead who were what looks like a sort of chainmail mask. And one of my favourite methods of offing the villain at the end.
Radar Men from the Moon: 1952: One of a handful of Rocket Man serials all of which I an quite fond of. along with King of the Rocket Men and Zombies of the Stratosphere also in 1952.
Captain America: 1944: An interesting, though unusual, take on the character. Got this on VHS way back.
Manhunt on Mystery Island: 1944: A really clever villain and one of the most frentic fight scenes in the first episode.
