This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

The next new tech revolution?

Ok, speculation time here: What do you think will be the next big breakthru in technology?

Now I don't mean an improvement in an existing field, I don't mean a refinment of existing tech, I don't mean just a new appliation for current tech, but a real, honest breakthru that creates something totally new, which opens up a whole plethora of new technologies. (BTW, for christmas ape: "Plethora" means "Lots and lots.)

My bet is on artificial muscles that are effective, reliable and have little maintainence. They've been working on those for years and years now with little success, but I have a feeling that the time and tech are getting close to making them possible.

If/When truly effective artificial muscles become available, it's really going to rip the lid off of a lot of fields. Robotics will benefit tremendously from them, with articulated robots capable of movements infinitely more subtle and free than motors and gears can ever provide.

Artificial limbs will become far superior than today's models. In fact I think it may be due to the massive numbers of amputees we have thanks to W's occupation of iraq that might lead some bright americans to finally develop artificial muscles to an effective degree.

I can't help thinking someone will make a new generation of sex toys, but really don't want to get into that...

Other possible new breakthru's/tech revolutions include new power generation, AI or new super materials based on carbon 60, along with new nanotech developments.

So what tech revolution are you expecting most?

I'd like nanotech, but I'd settle for really good batteries. Battery technology is holding a lot of portable technologies back.

Well, if they ever develop a truly useful superconductor you'll get your wish.

That's so cute, you pestiferous toad of a boy. What led to you picking me out - the apposite thing, or am I just the only person sick of your mewling that hasn't verbally ripped you a new cornhole and cowed you into submission yet?

I'll give you a tip, sparkles, because I know critical thinking and interpretation are exceedingly taxing to the syphillitic brain cells you haven't poisoned by huffing glue. It's because I don't care about you. You're like a Java game; I come online, take a cheap shot or two until I get bored, and go about my day posting to threads that interest me. This right here is the most you're likely to get out of me, you loathsome genetic eunuch, so bask in the attention you crave.

Also? There's this thing they call a "spellchecker" nowadays, which may help you look like less of a mouth-breathing hydrocephalic. I know, it's a big change, and change is scary when seven is a big number to count to. But don't worry, I'm sure in a day or two you'll forget all about it in the face of Voyager porn and coprophagy, and spelling words properly will seem natural.

On topic, I'm personally looking forward to some of the new materials technologies, particularly the efforts in low-G crystal lattice construction. Seriously!

Heroism is no more than a chapter in a tale of submission.

The internet recognizes only five forms of self-expression: bragging, talking shit, ass kissing, bullshitting, and moaning about how pathetic you are. Combine one with your favorite hobby and get out there!

I have heard of this recent break-through called spellcheck.  Some people are using it when writing messages to each other on the internet.

El Guapo, I know that I, Jefe, do not have your superior intellect and education, but could it be that once again, you are angry at something else, and are looking to take it out on me?

Comrades, you should try to be nice to Nox when he is not being racist or abominable. This is a more useful way of encouraging him to give up these behaviours than knacking him non-stop.

Oh well, my own answer to the spell check thing is a return to teaching spelling and math by rote, but I'm silly that way.

One night on the Art Bell show "Coast to Coast" they were talking about Memory Walls.
The idea is basically a programmable walls that use a variation on the nanotech idea.  You can reconfigure it different ways and set  it for example to be like a wall sized window  - but the outside world sees a big blank wall , but from the inside of it you have a huge window. Or "program" just parts of it to be a mirror from time to time.  Or maybe change the color of the wall completely without ever using paint.
