This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Quote from: RPGPunditPretty well all "reimaginings" suck, if they are of the "newer! edgier!" variety, and especially if they're of the "now politically correct!" variety.

It doesn't help that usually re-imaginings are done by people who HATED the original, and want to "do it right"; to teach those uppity fans what they should really like.
Like what Bruce Baugh did to Gamma World, for example.

You mean like the re-imagining of Planet of the Apes by Tim Burton? Then I agree with you.

Unfortunately, Ming the Merciless shall always be Max von Sydow in my book.
"Meh."

Yes, there's a good example. Infinitely dumber, totally focused on style over substance. It was crap.

Hey, it's a Tim Burton. After the huge crap he took on the caped crusader, something like this was to be expected...

I disagree. I've watched the charge of the Rohirrim across Pelennor Fields umpteen times and it never fails to get the blood pumping.

I'm glad you like it,and I mean that sincerely.  For my part, I hate those movies with a massive hate born over a long period of time. I never realized it until halfway through Return, though, and then it was instantly retroactive. I hate the music- especially the sappy hobbit theme, I hate the loopy half assed CGI camera shots, I hate the endless weeping and overblown sentamentality that pervades the entire trilogy; I hate the fact that PJ felt the need to basically hit the audience over the head with what is going on betwen sam/frodo/gollum over and over again, when I can't imagine that there is a viewer who didn't have agood understanding of it by the end of The Two Towers. I could go on, but the lynch mob is probably already gathering.

Fair enough, I'm certainly not demanding that you like it. I myself regard it as being far from perfect. On the other hand, I think given the sheer cost and scale of the project there were compromises that Jackson had to make in order to keep the audience on side. I've read the books many, many times, and thought a number of scenes in the films (especially those featuring Sam and Frodo in the latter part of the trilogy) were unecessary. But to a viewer who may not quite know what all this talk of Dark Lords and Elves is all about it's probably essential stuff.

The problem with a serialised story that spaces each instalment a year apart is that the director pretty much needs to re-establish old relationships and plot points in order to keep the guys who see this stuff at the cinema only in the picture. It's too big, too expensive and too complex a tale to rely on anything else.

As for your criticisms of the music and CGI, that's just crazy talk. ;)

well it's easy enough to agree to disagree- I undestand that PJ may have needed to do as you say to keep non reading fans onboard- unfourtuantely it drove me over the side.
BTW, on a lighter note my best friend and I inveneted a drinking game to play while watching the LoTR movies- it's called Frodo's tears.
Rules:
1. everytime someone cries drink once
2. everytime a hobbit cries drink twice
3. everytime frodo cries drink three times.

sadly, i can never sit though the movies again, and I haven't had a drink in over a decade; so it's for the kids really.

The original Alex Raymond comics most definitely did not. The movie, that's debatable (I do love it, BTW), especially since it was already a reimagining.

Ok, I was thinking of adding that the original comic didn't really suck.  So I concede that point as true.

I will also say that the 79-81 television series had its good points.  How can you not love a show with the chutzpah to run an episode titled "Planet of the Slavegirls"?  ;)

Oooops.  I crossed the pop-culture streams there.

But yes, the Buck Rodgers tv series was prime early 80's fromage.
