You see last night's episode of Boston Legal? I loved it. :) Denny Crane and the rest of the BL team are taken hostage by the son of a long-dead murder victim, and then forced to reenact a 50-year-old  murder trial. Denny has these nostalgic flashbacks to when he was a young buck pulling a cheap stunt to get his client acquitted of murder (whom he believed was innocent).

In the flashbacks, Shatner was playing a young twenty-something lawyer, being berated by his father(played by the long-deceased Ralph Bellamy) for his courtroom tactics. You should check it out.

The flashbacks are from a real show done by Shatner back in 1957. On IMDB, it said "Studio One", The Defender: Part 1, The Defender: Part 2.

 I agree about both of those . The secret to the difference? In 1978 he was taking himself TOO seriously.  In recent years he has mellowed and figured out how to relax and have a bit of fun with the public's perception of him.  
 He doesn't mind so much joking about his persona and smiling when he does it.  
 Thats part of what makes the character of Denny Crane so likable.

Shatner is awesome in the role, the character is hilarious, but is it just me or has he stopped saying "Denny Crane" every 5 seconds?

 I think they just bring that running gag out for special ocassions now or sweeps episodes.
