Title: The all new revised, what are you listening to thread?
Post by: Serious Paul on June 27, 2007, 11:48:47 AM
SO I am sure someone's posted this, maybe even me, but what's in your CD Player/MP3 player/ IPOD/What not at the moment? I am always on the hunt for something new or something I've missed!

Currently I have been listening to some rap from Bangladesh and Malaysia, but  I'm afraid I don't know the artists off hand-and the guy who sent me the stuff didn't label it.

Malaysian Rap? I'm old...

MP3 at home is usually on a big shuffle, so no favorites there. My "car" only has a normal CD player, so here we go:
Edguy - Rocket Ride
Tin Lizzy - Greatest Hits
Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos
Kamelot - Ghost Opera
Black Sabbath - The Dio Years
Symphony X - Paradise Lost

Pretty one-sided, but well, driving music. My car isn't silent enough for the highly sophisticated post-modern japanese symphonies I listen to everywhere else ;)

What do you think of the Hellyeah CD? I was pretty happy with a few of the tracks, but some of it was disappointment for me.

Over all I like it. Sure a couple songs dont do much for me. But more than a couple are awesome. But I suppose that could be said about most albums. I especially like Hellyeah (track #1), You Wouldnt Know (track#2), Matter of Time (track#3), Alcohaulin' Ass (track#5), and Rotten to the Core (track#9).

I got to say I'm pretty much a sucker for Vinnie Paul/Pantera stuff. I typically dig it. Pantera (http://www.officialpantera.com/), Damage Plan (http://www.damageplan.com/), Rebel meets Rebel (http://www.rebelmeetsrebel.com/main.html), and Hellyeah (http://www.hellyeahrocks.com/) all rock.

[steps up on soap box] Phil Anselmo is a piece of shit. He was and is such a drunk and drug addict. That he cant even function properly. This is what helped break up Pantera. Then some crazed assbag Anselmo fan. Is the fucker that shot Dimebag. Dimebag for those who dont know. Besides being a fucking awesome metal guitarist. Was a great person, that would take the time to talk to any one. From people I've met, that met him, or knew him he was a hell of a guy. [steps off soap box]

The Sword: (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=3145468) Old skool metal played by pasty 120lb teenagers from Austin. The vocals are a bit suspect, but they certainly can kick out the jams.

Almost everything Cake has put out, I'm going to listen to tommorrow before lunch.  Some songs I'll even enjoy twice.

After that, depending upon how my ears are liking me at that point, I'll trapse over to...hell, I dunno.  Dirty South Rap probably.

Danger-who is down with it, yo.

Heh...all that matters right now - my In Extremo and Megadeth. Some Metallica thrown in for good measure, but mainly In Ex. In the car, when I go to sleep, when I clean....

At this moment, I just happen to be putting together a list of CDs to grab and throw in the van for a couple of days out in the field.

Arctic Monkeys - "Your Favorite Worst Nightmare"
A pleasantly surprisingly strong follow-up album to their debut.  They go from reminding me of The Sex Pistols and The Clash at the opening to reminding me of Jim Morrison and The Doors by the close, and yet they have a sound all of their own that isn't dependent on homage.

Amy Winehouse - "Back to Black"
Another stronger follow-up to a debut album.  She sounds like Nina Simone and Little Jimmy Scott's jewish lovechild.  A fantastic blend of 60s blues and soul with contemporary hipness.

Smokey and Miho - "The Two EPs"
Miho Hatori of Cibo Matto finds her groove in curiously Japanese-influenced samba and bossa nova.

The Clash - "London Calling"
Possibly the greatest album of the 1980s that I inexplicably didn't own in the 1980's.  Strictly speaking, it's from the very late 70s, but man it rocks.

If you like that, then you might enjoy Skullbot (http://www.myspace.com/skullbot).  Same MO.  Seriously.  And they're pretty good!

I drive around to Pelleas et Melisande and Verklarte Nacht by Schoenberg, the 7th Symphony ("Leningrad") by Shostakovich, Porgy and Bess, Bitches Brew and Ascenseur pour l'echaffaud by Miles Davis, Set Your Heart on Fire by Stars, Neon Bible by the Arcade Fire, Ys by Joanna Newsom and the most recent Of Montreal disc right now.

I play RPGs to Therion, Rasputina, Coil, Dimmu Borgir and that kind of thing. I also have a mix CD of this music one of my fellow gamers gave to me that I play when I drive around.

I drink to Funeral by Band of Horses and Ca' the Yowes to the Knowes by Joanna Newsom, as well as Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell 3 all set on endless repeat.

I have 90 Gb's of music at the moment, and I've been slowly plowing through it all-everything from the Stones to French Rap to traditional Islamic music to hardcore metal of any sort to Industrial and Ambient, I like just about everything. (Well except much of the Country and Western genres, I just can't get down with that stuff.)

You might try some old country. The new stuff is just pop music in disguise. The old stuff is where its at.  Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson (Who by the way all sang together as "The Highwaymen"), Hank Williams Sr., Jr., Patsy Cline, Kenny Rogers (How can you not like the gambler?), Jerry Reed (I dare you not to sing along with "East Bound and Down"), and Charlie Daniels Band ("The Devil Went Down To Georgia" need I really even name anymore?).
A couple honorable mentions I think are Commander Cody and his Lost Airmen (Hot Rod Lincoln), and The Eagles (the Desperado album specifically)

[EDIT] Anything considered "Outlaw Country" or "Bluegrass" is good to go in my opinion

Quote from: RoninYou might try some old country.

Or even some new(ish) countryesque stuff, like:

Lucero: (http://luceromusic.com/audiovideo.php) Punkish country straight out of Memphis, TN. The singer has a great three packs of camel no-filters per day voice, plus he's an Arkansas boy, so he knows all about being downtrodden. ;) "Nobody's Darlings" is their best song.

Son Volt: (http://www.sonvolt.net/) One of the founding alt.country bands that's undergoing a bit of a resurgence. Jay Farrar writes awesome stream-of-consciousness lyrics that accompany some of the sweetest vintage guitar tones ever recorded.

Lucinda Williams: (http://www.lucindawilliams.com/) One of the best song-writers around in any genre, Lucinda writes hooky bluesy country with heart-wrenching lyrics and a complete lack of over-produced Nashville Sound bullshit. Plus she has a really sexy boozy voice. Her dad is the well known poet, Miller Williams. I recommend her album "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road."

Right now I'm listening to Silvio Rodriguez' latest album, "Erase que se Era".

One of my recent blog entries (http://www.xanga.com/RPGpundit/604108544/item.html) was about Rodriguez, so I'm sharing the link here.

That sounds interesting. Say have you heard of a band that goes by the name of Gotan Project?

I'll be looking into this Silvio Rodriguez, as I am always interested in new stuff.

Earlier...during my shift at work I was listening to these CDs:

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER "Once More With Feeling" Soundtrack of the musical episode that got me interested in watching the show. (also some customers like it when they hear it playing during my shifts.)

THE BEST of THE CALL, The Millenium Collection. - specifically ordered that CD to get the song thats in one of the YouTube videos in my sig. The rest of the songs are also pretty good - so I play it at work. Kind of an Anthem/political rock group with a bit of soul to them.

CAMELOT Original Broadway Cast Recording.
Its a game store, I like musicals, King Arthur, Knights, we sell PENDRAGON - its perefect match musically speaking.

EVANESENCE - BRING ME TO LIFE The 4 song singles CD version.
I just like it - and it does "wake me up" during the slow parts of the shift.

EDMONSON, Greg - "FIREFLY" - soundtrack of the TV series.
I play TRAVELLER, we sell that and other games similiar. I LOVe the show, so do customers - 'nuff said.

TALKING HEADS - STOP MAKING SENSE
Soundtrack CD to the live concert movie. I LOVE that group, always have..."safe" to play at work...plus they restored and added song that were never on the old cassete version.

Right now I have FOX NEWS or Sci-Fi channel on  just as background noise. Thinking of putting on either the 4400 soundtrack CD...or some ENYA.   Maybe some old "Pop Will Eat Itself" instead.

Yes, Gotan Project are ok, sort of on the trendy side these days. But their original album was utterly innovative.

Coworker brought in a cover of Stairway to Heaven sung by Dolly Parton. Its good, hauntingly good. I can't seem to erase the damn thing from my mind.
