I think they are quite good. If you've ever read Tales from a Chinese Studio by Pu Songling they are based on the Painted Skin story in there. I believe there is a translation of the short story here: http://www.illuminatedlantern.com/cinema/archives/short_stories_the_painted_skin.php

The 1993 version is really hard to get and probably only worth it if you are a fan of King Hu (I liked the movie but it is a bit dated and absent the context of it being a King Hu movie might not appeal to people as much). The newer films have pretty good special effects and add in more spirited beast elements than the original story had. I think of the two new ones, the second (Resurrection) is a bit better, but part one is enjoyable as well and has Donnie Yen in it.

I do have a soft spot for the Conan Movies I must admit.

Fire and Ice is a class little flick.

One of my favorite fantasy films is Krull. Not at all because of the heroes. The main beardy guy is wetter than a burst water pipe.

But the Beast is absolutely class. And the concept, that he is some kind of horrific alien is cool as well. Those minions the parasitic slayers and doppelgangers were so creepy. Lovecraft would be proud!

But killed by 'love' in the end... For shame.

I'll have to find that book then!

I'm trying to think of some Japanese fantasy films, they tend towards ghost stories like Ugetsu, The Black Cat. Under the Cherry Blossom Trees, Woman in the Dunes and Akira Kurosawa's Dreams are some exceptions.

While not TECHNICALLY A movie the Legend of Crystania is super solid another one is Rune explorers though it throws around A few more jokes and gags.
If you are in to tv shows try magic knight rayearth ( literally the series that invented the term "magic knight") sorcerer stabber orphen and Slayers (more A comedy for fans of fantasy but fun).

Actually Aura Battler Dunbine is sort of A s&s mech show and so is uhhh whats is called damn I'll remember eventually.

Strange Tales From a Chinese Studio (the Penguin edition is available pretty cheap on Amazon). It has tons of short accounts of the strange. It is quite perfect for gaming inspiration because the stories get right into the monster details.

I went and watched Krull again for the first time since forever. I don't think I cared for it much when I originally saw it and... I still think it's pretty awful. Some neat designs though and nice landscapes... the spider cave was cool.

Would you include Highlander as Sword & Sorcery? Except for the modern setting, it's got some of the elements.
