Title: Star Trek to return in 2008
Post by: RockViper on February 28, 2007, 04:27:54 PM
This is probably old news to everyone, but I haven't seen it posted here yet.

After Enterprise I think they may be flogging a dead horse.

Well, since its a movie instead of a new series, it might be o.k. I semi-kinda trust JJ Abrams after the work with LOST so far, but I'm not sure I'm ready for Ben Affleck as Kirk.

Now, if the rumor of Gary Sinese as McCoy is true, then you've got something. It never occured to me until I read it on another site, but I think that would be an inspired piece of casting. He's even got some of the same mannerisms.

Yep, I'm not sure it's a step in the right direction but at least the property is getting some attention.

If there was a new Trek series that continued the TOS > TNG > DS9 > VOY continuity I'd certainly be interested, despite my own lack of interested in VOY and Enterprise.

Hm.  A film.  Not a television series.  As long as they promise to not beat the dead horse on a weekly basis, I might be interested.

I liked Next Gen.
I liked DS9, a lot, even if it ripped off B5.
Voyager was watchable, but not unmissable.
Enterprise?...

Well, I've been watching the repeats on Sky (or I did) but mainly because they coincide with when I have lunch. I hate to sound so shallow but what really killed Enterprise for me on first go around was the theme song.

It was just... awful, it wasn't Trek, it wasn't SF, it was just... wank.

Similar thing happened with Andromeda. When the theme was March of the Highguard it rocked on toast and was good cheesy fun, when they changed it? Not so much.

If they did make a new series I think they should return to the ToS/Next Gen format. Skip the timeline forward a couple of decades or something and have at it.

I don't think that's shallow at all.  Especially on a commercial production, the opening musical theme is essentially putting your best foot forward, a show's statement of purpose and recognisable strength.  First they show you the little teaser of an opening scene, then they cut to the music that's supposed to draw you fully into the world they're creating.

Any time you'd hear the opening theme to TOS or TNG, you knew where you were and what you were doing.  Any time you'd hear the opening theme for Enterprise, you knew you were in Cheeseville and that it was time to leave the room to get something to eat.  It was too Here-and-Now, and crappy Here-and-Now at that.

For fuck's sake let it die.

I like the original series, I thought TNG was a soap opera for geeks, I understand Deep Space 9 was pretty good but never really saw it, Voyager and Enterprise seem to have won little love.

It's done, maybe spend that money on some new great thing rather than flogging the corpse of this one.

Guys, hate to tell you this  , but STAR TREK has become the pop culture version of either Jason or Freddy Krueger  from the slasher horror movies. Its going to keep coming "back from the Dead".  Thats my cyinical burned-out take on it. (And those of you who know me from other places, know that I like some TREK)

The "sunny"/optimist view would be Thank god J.J. ABrams is taking a shot at it - maybe it can be good again.

This may be a sign of Judgement Day or whatnot, but I disagree with Balbinus.

I liked a lot TOS, I'm liking a lot TNG (only have seen 2 seasons, mind you), and I loved DS9 dearly (though I think that Babylon 5 is better). Can't say anything about Voyager or Enterprise.

Let's wait and see. When Batman Begins was released I was 'meh', and got a good surprise.

Honestly, while I never watched the last few Trek series, I do think there's something...I dunno...missing from the cultural landscape when there are no  current Star Trek series is on the air.

That might be a bit strong.  Like I said I'm not emotionally invested in having a new series or anything.  Just kind of a small, lingering, wistful feeling...hmm, still not right but I haven't got the words for it right now.
