Ghost Whistler

Please send recommendations for music suitable to inspire kung fu in space that I may be inspired in writing ideas for my wuxia space opera project. Thanks.

EDIT: and please, no Enigma.
"Ghost Whistler" is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). Parental death, alien battles and annihilated worlds.

I vote for Knights of Cydonia:

More because of the "kung-fu-spagetti-western-IN-SPAAAACEE" vibe in the video than the actual music, probably. The part at the beginning where our hero is practicing his various kung-fu styles is particularly fun.

I've got this one CD someone sent me..Singing Bowls of Shangri La by Thea Surasu.

It's strange, and very "space" in feeling to me. I'm not sure its inspirational, but sure fits my feel of space fu and the Oriental nature of the thing.

I'd also look up on youtube, some J-pop/J-rock. Some of that may be frenetic and appropriate but I don't listen to much music (sadly) anymore and most of what I do is more fantasy-horror (Lordi) than anything else.

Though I would like to recommend Styx "Come Sail Away" since its whacky fun. Metallica's lyric less "Orion" is also a good one to listen to for just the sounds that I feel would work for SW. (Star Wuxia)

the jazz-fusion group Tangerine Dream, almost anything by them.

Danger

I start from his boots and work my way up. It takes a good half a roll to encompass his jolly round belly alone. Soon, Father Christmas is completely wrapped in clingfilm. It is not quite so good as wrapping Roy but it is enjoyable nonetheless and is certainly a feather in my cap.

My immediate though was the soundtrack from Cowboy Bebop, which covers a huge span of genres, though mostly rooted in jazz.  It's out of print, and if you can find a copy of the 5-CD boxed set it's horridly expensive, but it's out there in many forms.  Try a search for "Cowboy Bebop OST" -- I don't recall if the box set was called "Complete" or "Ultimate".

I suggest a track by Noisia and Mayhem, Moonway Renegade (the fighty stuff starts around 1:20) It's a drum'n'bass track, a genre that can fit the futuristic feeling (at least today) and the samples used are really kung fu friendly.

The artist who composed the songs from that soundtrack was Yokko Kanno (sometimes spelled Yoko Kano) and has done a tremendous amount of musical composition. Another good lead to follow up on.

Lee Jung Hyun's Wa ("Come" or "Come Back") (warning: audio is loud!). Korean but if you must have Chinese, since there's a Japanese version I'd bet either she's done a Mandarin Chinese version or some knockoff Chinese singer did one.

though gamer fu will likely look more like this

I'd add the Wolf's Rain soundtracks to complement the Cowboy Bebops along with some songs from Macross Plus and the latest Macross show. But Bebop especially (also due to the character Spike being Bruce Lee in Spaaaace).

Macross Frontier is the latest Macross show. Since it has a Chinese character and is in space:

Nyan-Nyan song
Super Dimension Chinese Restaurant Nyan-Nyan ^.^ (w/out subtitles)
Symphonic medley version :worship:
Usage? Like the Fruity Oaty Bar commercial from Serenity. For that matter the Firefly & Serenity soundtracks might work too, and fit in both with the Knights of Cydonia and Cowboy Bebop stuff.

And I'd be remiss if I mentioned a Macross / Robotech show without some plane fu set to Ranka Lee's cover of Minmei's Watashi no Kare wa Pilot (sadly no missile fu in this clip :()

Macross Plus:
A sai en
cello version of Voices

Ghost Whistler

I had hoped I would be able to locate agin the Big Trouble In Little China sountrack, but it's never on spotify.

So sad. Well ignore the images (though the commercials are at least suitable for a space wuxia) and just listen to the music. Seriously, Yoko Kanno (and her music group) are *that* good. They just happen to make most of their money working for (often well-done) animated instead of live action productions.

Not familiar with anime future pop, closest to that that I'm aware of is the retro lounge / bossa nova stuff (Shibuya-kei) like capsule, Cibo Matto, and Pizzicato Five. But I don't know if you want bossa nova old or new in a space wuxia, I wouldn't mind, but that's me. :)

There's always capsule's younger sisters, perfume. A nice, though long, edit of the new Tron with perfume's electro world.

As for Spotify, well it sounds great, but since I live in the land of the RIAA (i.e. the USA) it's not an option. :( Do they perhaps share their music or at least sample it elsewhere?

Hi!
Spotify isn't available in my country.
Have found tv243.com a great alternative for it,
it shuffles music videos, not only the songs.

you aren't missing much, unless you like inappropriate advertising between every song.
