This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

So long, RCTV...

Another voice goes down in Venezuela, and only Globovision remains... for now.

Final moments of RCTV here.

I thought Bush was the one stifling dissent by shutting down TV stations, closing newspapers, and killing anyone who dared speak out against him.

I mean, that's what they keep telling us...

That's a shame, although I feel somewhat embarassed that on reading the thread title my first thought was "Rules Cyclopedia TV"...

Oh, come on. That's like me saying Micheal Savage is the one, true voice of conservatives. Anyone can pick on what idiots say, and those are the left's idiots. Don't try to turn every post into a bash on your political opponents.

That said, Chavez is a fucking crook. The silencing of the media is a godamn sham. It's awful, and the Venezualians have my sincere condolences for having such an asshole in charge.
God in the Machine.

Here's my website. It's defunct, but there's gaming stuff on it. Much of it's missing. Sorry.

RCTV's main news program, El Observador, is moving to YouTube.

Interesting development.

This is just a logical extension of the "Information wants to be free" meme. It'll be progressively harder for repressive societies to keep their people in the dark with the spread of teh intarweb. That is of course a good thing.

Damn right. People are funny in that they don't realize what an astoundingly historically significant and humanity-changing invention the internet really is.  People will one day look back at the 90s and the creation of the internet the way we now do the Gutenberg printing press.

Oh, and on topic...

It's interesting to me that, with everything that has been going on there, the this is the thing that's got the place in the uproar.

Is this wrong?  Is there always an uproar and this is just making it into the world press cause it's a TV station? Is this just the straw that breaks the camels back?

Why now?

I'm truly curious...

Because its a very public and very in-your-face way of saying "I'm not going to put up with dissent" - and that just makes people want to dissent even more.

That's my take on it at least.

The trick is, don't shut down the media. Let'em rip you if they want - but just keep doing what you're going to do anyway. Works great here in the US. :)
