Title: Rebel Moon Director's Cuts: Bigger, Dumber, Bloodier
Post by: ForgottenF on August 08, 2024, 12:37:14 PM
I saw the launch day versions of the two Rebel Moon movies. They're typical Snyder fare in their way: big, dumb melodramas with murky color-grading lots of violence. Stylish enough, albeit with the usual overabundance of slow-mo. The slow-mo hurts them more than it does other Snyder movies, because the fight choreography is pretty terrible. I remember at the time they got a lot of stick from reviewers for pilfering too many ideas from Star Wars and Warhammer 40k, but I didn't hate them. I find Zack Snyder's work a lot more endearing when he's just doing straightforward melodrama and not trying to be philosophical.

Now the "Director's Cuts" are out, boy are they more of the same. They do fill in some gaps in the plot, but mostly they just turn the edginess up to 11. Swear words, head explosions and blood splatter aplenty. The gore is truly gratuitous. Instead of the Imperial ships running on coal, they now run on the literal corpses of their enemies. We also get the return of the full length cinematic sex scene, which I don't think I've seen in a mainstream movie since the 90s.

These are the kind of movies where you can pick apart the internal logic for days, but if you've got a lot of free time and can look past the stupidity, they're not a bad watch. Fun for how incredibly corny they are. They're full of the kind of goofy rule-of-cool ideas that are laughable in a movie but make fun inspirations for gaming.

Just checked, and the new version of Rebel Moon never made it into the top 10 of most viewed movies on Netflix. The Emoji Movie did, however.

When the initial Rebel Moon came out, all the Snyder fans were talking about how the Rated R version was going to be a huge hit and that the bad initial viewership numbers didn't matter.

That is so stupid as to come around again to cool.
Not defending the movie. Haven't seen it. Word of mouth (like here :) ) kept me away.

In my opinion, the biggest problem with these movies is that they are over-long and self-indulgent.  Part One is already 30-45 minutes too long.  The director's cut adds another 88 minutes to that.  That's a whole other movie's worth of running time.

The rebel moon saga is so lame (imo). It's a laborious revamp of all space op Sci-fi movies. Beautiful CGI effects for sure but these do not make a good movie. I'm a a Synder enthousiast but it appears thar rebel moon (even the director's cut) is completely useless for inspiration (as far as rpg are concerned.
