IIRC, our own Pete is connected to Northern Illinois University in DeKalb where at least 5 people were killed in a lecture hall shooting.

Yeah, I'm fine, thanks!  My shift ends at 3:00pm which was about when everything happened.  It seems that the situation is contained and that the gunman may even be dead, either by himself or the police, I'm not sure.

Just heard, 5 people dead, over a dozen injured -- the shooter used a shotgun.  Cole hall is smack-dab in the middle of the campus and sees a lot of students.

Scary stuff.

Hey man - just wanted to make sure you were OK.  It's all over the news and CNN has a guy (George Gainer - Senior Geography major) who claims to have been in the class...

(I'm getting 18 wounded on CNN, in addition to the 5 dead.)

Glad you're okay Pete.

A college in Toronto was just locked down this past Friday with reports of a gunman on campus -- although luckily it turned out to be a false alarm.

Scary stuff indeed.

NIU had to cancel classes just a couple of months ago due to some threats of violence posted on a bathroom wall in one of the dorms.  It was deemed a ruse mostly because it was during finals week and so nothing immediately was done, security-wise.

A lot of speculation is flying about but it appears the gunman was not an NIU student and he did indeed kill himself.

What is up with this fucking trend anyway? This isn't entirely a rhetorical question either. Why are education facilities so often at the center of such incidents? We've had several in Montreal.

I'm guessing there's an element of Stand Alone Complex in it. Once it becomes highly publicized that one group did it, dozens of individuals suddenly start thinking of it as a legitmate, if extreme, direction for their wrath to take. After all, the other ones were highly publicized...
