Title: OH HOLY BLEEP Ready Player One the movie might NOT suck
Post by: kosmos1214 on December 12, 2017, 09:04:14 PM
Okay I recently did A short form review of the book ready player one in the book thread and I knew it was going to be made in to A movie.
Now after reading A fantastic book and knowing they where making it in to A movie my first reaction was that the movie was going to be balls because there was no way they where going to spend the money they needed to to get the cameos and Easter eggs that the book runs on.But after watching the trailer I might have been wrong (it would rather be nice in this instance) as it seems they are spending the money for the little things in the background. The only thing that leaves is do they leave the movie A long enough run time and not gut the idea's at the books core.

Spielberg's non-fantastic films like Munich and Bridge of Spies are among his best. His genre work post-Third Encounters is unrven, but perhaps this could include both films virtues.

I only know the book in passing. Looks interesting so far. I would lay good odds though that they change something significantly. Possibly alot.
Never trust a trailer.
Never underestimate the ability of execs to either fuck things up or deliberately sabotage.

Exec: "Our on-line poll indicates that 10 people really like the old guy so we want you to reshoot so hes the main character now. Oh and get rid of all that VR stuff."

I didn't know of this movie until now, looks like a story mix of TRON and the Japanese .Hack/SAO theme, with a LOT of references to classic movies and games. It seems also close to what I wrote as option for the possible future for RPG thread. I like it.

Its kind of like a cyberpunk version of "Its a Mad Mad Mad World" except not a comedy and without Spencer Tracy.

Yeah there are all ready changes in the trailers that I picked up on I think I'll make A post on it tbh. And I very much agree my reaction to book adaptions by the modern movie industry is pretty simple "how are they going to manage to fuck this up".
It's just that in this case they look like they are willing to throw money at the place I thought they wouldn't the references and they have the books writer on deck for the screen play so yeah.

Originally A book A very good book. If you like sci-fi it is defiantly worth A read I did A short review on it in the book thread. If you want more then that check out the Wikipedia page it doesn't do the book justice but it's A good some up.
Just remember if you read the wiki page THERE WILL BE SPOILERS and trust me when I say this is one of those books where spoilers make A big difference in how impactful the book is.

Having the writer on board is never a guarantee its going to not be changed past recognition. The latest two TMNT atrocities being a good example. and some might well argue the CGI Captain Scarlet was much worse off.

TMNT...what exactly did you expect, quality characterizations and deep themes? As I recall the comics were decent but the cartoons were, nostalgia aside, trash.

I LOVED the book and had my biases when I watched the trailer. The first time I watched it, I was floored. Wade Watts looks nothing like how I pictured him, the first challenge is completely different from what's in the book -- A race? Really? -- and why is Trace from Overwatch charging in the battle? I'll still watch the movie regardless. But I'm sure a lot of people who read the book will have their issues with it.

How was the film adaptation? My friend is in love with the novel so really concerned that movie butchers it and will give him a stroke if goes to see it.
