I just saw the new Futurama movie tonight, Bender's Game.
It turns out Bender's game is Dungeons & Dragons (and the whole movie is dedicated to Gygax), and many jokes about the game abound. Bender dismiss the game at first, but then it's revealed he is envious of the kids playing becaus ehe has no imagination. He then develops and imagination so that he can play, but promptly goes insane when he can't distinguish between D&D and reality. Been there!
Most of the plot revolves around two MacGuffins that look like a D20 and a D12, and about half the movie takes place in an alternate reality informed by Bender's imagination (a hysterical romp through a very gonzo take on LoTR).
The movie was in production for months, and so some of the current events comedy falls flat -- jokes about rising gas prices seem particularly ironic with gas prices currently plummeting -- but the same delay means that the movie features a voice cameo from Gary.
This is definitely a must-see for gamers.
I've been a big fan of all the Futurama movies so far, as well as the series itself, and I'm really looking forward to this one.
How'd you see it? The street date is November 4th.

I have friends with magic internet powers.
I'm gonna pay for mine, so that DVD sales will be strong and more Futurama can get made.
That's nice. Do you want a cookie?
Doc, the way it works now is that you download the movie, watch it, and then buy the DVDs because you don't want that shit cluttering your hard drive.
