Pabst!?!

You're not a grad student. Don't you know, it's mandatory that grad students pay too much for beer. You have to shell out for the most expensive imports available. Otherwise, you're dissertation committee will never respect you and they'll make you read more books about the price of T in China. My God man, think of your career!

For me it's one more day.

One.

More.

Much soberer now...

Why no love for Pabst Blue Ribbon?  I did my senior thesis on beer, this was in undergrad, and my question was why American beer was considered inferior to European beer.

I drank a lot of beer that semester.

But here's the skinny on Pabst: it's only one of four American breweries that has continuously operated through US history without changing its recipe.  It's a light beer that's been light for 150 years.  It's not too hoppy (and I don't like hoppy beer), and has a warm bready taste that I really enjoy!

And it's less than $15 dollars a case!  Cheap beer that tastes good?  Sign me up!

Actually, I was just reminded of the time I took a six pack of bud to a party at Grad School. I could just feel my status lower as I entered the room and placed it in a fridge filled with every import imaginable. Talk about matter out of place.

Anyway, congrats on finishing a semester.

Congrats, Joe. I also just finished the semester-my first back at school after a 5 year hiatus after I was forced to drop out my Junior year due to work.

I prefer quality over quantity though, so I'm having Newcastle :p

That's a part of it...but you know most American breweries (all sizes, but mostly the little guys) actually follow it.  Pabst Blue Ribbon, for instance, is one of only a few mass market beers in the US that follows the German Purity Law.

Brimshack, I've been there, and I got a few comments because of my twelver of PBR.  But, these people pride themselves as Socialists and Communists, and when I jokingly (but deadpan) pointed out that I wanted to drink an actual Proletarian beer, those assholes "tried it" and drank all my Pabst because they were posturing with each other!

I think the distinction between European, in which I mean German, and American brew is that American brew has a lot more crap brew.  For every Yuengling, Budweiser, PBR you have 6 times the amount of Schlitz, Fort Pitt, Milwaukees Best, Keystone etc...   Sure, it's a matter of taste but when I was in Germany I didn't find many bad brews.  For the most part, it was either good or awesome.  Also, in Germany almost every town has their own microbrews.

All I can say joewolz, is get your ass to Germany and discover it for yourself.  Don't base your observations on the German beers we get here in the states.  It's a culture of beer drinking and it was wonderful.  I miss Germany.

To be fair, I did have a lot of German beer shipped here from a few different cities, I didn't just drink imports.

On taste:  In America, we like to drink things by the 50-gallon drum, so "savoring" is not something we do well, culturally.

You don't savor a good beer?  I'm shocked!

If you Germans have the same attitude toward drinking we do...you'd be better off shotgunning Keystone ICEs, since your canned beer is still better than Keystone ICE.

They do.  Beer is available everywhere in Germany (vending machines, military bases, restaurants, pretzel carts, etc...).  On the military bases the Germans were allowed to have 2 beers during lunch at the mess hall, which is shocking to see.  That and your within walking distance of a bar where they predominantly serve draft beer.    It actually reminded me a lot of Pennsylvania.
