i find it amazing that that show has such a large following. the models apparently still sell well, I see them all over the online hobby shops, with new stuff coming out for them, like photoetch for 30yo MPC model kits. amazing.

For me, as an adult, I'm more fascinated by the production values of the show than I am the writing and acting.
The production values are neat, because they are the apex of pre-Star Wars TV effects. The show is basically shot with models like Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet, with nearly all the effects being done in-camera, but it has ambitions to be a true AAA title. And because they're working with models, you occasionally get something amazing like an Eagle flying down from a blue sky and flying around a model terrain and landing, all done with scale models. It looks better than it has any right to look.
I find the storylines pretty basic, and it can be slow going, particularly in the first season. There's a good bit of 1970s malaise that creeps in, which I didn't care for then or now.
Still, it holds a place of pure nostalgia for me, because when I was little, it was shown at 5 PM on Saturdays, and I would watch it because of course I would, any sci fi on TV was a rare treat in 1975. When the end credits rolled, I'd get called up to family dinner. It's a happy memory.
First season was far superior.
Though I like 2nd season for its own quirkyness. But the show lost its grounding when they brought in the new guy from the US to manage things.
Space: 1999 also cemented my dislike of Harlan Ellison and Ben Bova.
