Title: Just saw the Flash Gordon pilot
Post by: Sosthenes on August 14, 2007, 05:13:58 PM
...and boy it's crap. If you really want to remake Sliders, why call it Flash Gordon?

FAIL

Yeah, I watched it too. I didn't think it was THAT awful, but it certainly could have been about 1000 times better. I'm vastly disappointed in Ming the Middle Manger. And Dale has a wierd cottage cheese face that kept bugging me. It was lumpy!

Oh well.

I actually liked the Flash dude and the two other main dudes aren't too bad either, once you accept that the basic stuff is upgraded to 21st century sensibilities. They actually went little conservative there, no sex and/or race changes.

But yeah, what is the matter with Ming? Come on, random guy, shaved head, a little makeup: Tadah. I wasn't expecting von Sydow, the equivalent of a video game bad guy would have been alright, bonus points for being British.

No rocketships and sets that a amateur theater group could improvise better in their home town. And what's the matter with the totally non-threatening chief roller-skate scientist?

Meh. Sci-Fi obviously doesn't have money left.

I watched portions of the first half last night at sci fi website, and it was indeed crappy. it took way too long to get to mongo and to make matters worse they used a fucking doorway.

Utter garbage. One of the worst Sci-Fi channel productions I've seen.

I've watched Supergator 3 times now so I obviously don't have high standards, yet this one killed me.

I too thought it was dreadful.

The Ming I imagine needn't be some horrible "sly chinee" streotype, but he should be physically impressive.

I want him robed in full imperial regalia, fingers dripping with obscene jewelery. I want to see a shaved head, maybe with a long topknot and penetrating, snake-like eyes. I want him to have glandular implants that let him breathe poison into a would-be assassins face. He should be the one floating floating around on an agrav disc, looking down on everyone in the room. I want him to blend the savagery of Gengis Khan with the urbane erudition of a Roman Emperor. All who enter his presence should be in a perpetual state of barely concealed terror because he's the god king of all he surveys, destroyer of worlds.

In short I want The Emperor of Fucking Mongo, not some mid-level functionary who wandred off the Galactica set.

And don't even get me started on the "fight" sequence with the robot in the kitchen. Frying pans, blenders and comedy proton guns. My God...

Yeah, Ming is a big weak point. Even with the dreadful budget they seem to have, a few razors and some faux-Chinese regalia should have been possible (no, jhkim, I don't want to hear about the inherent racism).
The rest of the cast wasn't that off. Flash wasn't as young as I feared, rather charismatic and had some tries at one-liners, Dale remained a plucky brunette and Zarkoff just moved into the current geek stereotype. But Ming? A vase would've been better cast.

Rocketships might have strained the limits, but I think even those should have been possible with a little suspension of disbelief (board a cheap set and just show a few flying CGI ships. Mostly you just need one or two, not a whole space battle). Well, at least we got no stupid robots. Biddy-biddy.

Dang, I really want a campy sci-fi series. The world is in dire need of one...

I didn't think it was that terribly, but if there isn't quite a bit of improvement soon, I won't be watching it.

FLASH!  *BOOM*  .... Meh. (http://xbowvsbuddha.blogspot.com/2007/08/flash-boom-meh.html)

EDIT: At one point I say, "It's not bad".  That statement in in error.  The proper statement is "It's medicore and I hope it peters out so someone ELSE can get the rights and do a better job."

Thank you.

It's very difficult to create one on purpose.  Every time the SciFi Channel tries to be campy on purpose, it's horrible.

Black Scorpion

*shudder*

The best camp comes from people who take what they are doing seriously.  If you start out treating it like a joke, it's doomed to failure.

The folks responsible need to be dragged out and shot, live.

Well, you don't have to take it all that seriously, you just have to pay attention that you're not thinking about adding camp too much. The Flash movie was a rather decent example -- on the other hand, outside of the UK it bombed pretty heavily.

I want a Troma sci-fi series. Yes, I do.

It's been said that was Filmation's best work.  There's a DVD set; I'm thinking about getting it.

Ugh. Episode two of the new series was groan-worthy...

We skipped it.  My wife made invites to our daughter's birthday party while I read The Risus Companion and downloaded "Ring of Thieves".

Bah, "Flush Boredom"!
