Title: Important thread on rpg.net
Post by: Pierce Inverarity on April 16, 2007, 11:59:41 AM
There's a thread in Trouble Tickets in which a new user asked why there's no Exalted subforum, given its popularity. The difference to dozens of other threads like it from the past is that Darren has come out and agreed that would be a good idea.

This means the thread can't be dismissed quite so easily. They have to take it seriously. So now's your chance to speak your mind on the matter, and show the mods and admins that it's a deep and pervasive problem.

Important ?
 Maybe, maybe not .

 Interesting ? Oh hell yes.

Thanks for the link.

Darren and that poster's resons and assumptions for creating a new subforum are faulty.
Popularity of RPGs is a cyclic thing. I could make an argument, based on just what I see at TWO game stores that DUNGEONS  & DRAGONs and White Wolf's WORLD of DARKNESS are both more popular than EXALTED.
Heck , when  we subtract out my purchases - GURPS is more popular than EXALTED is in this local region.

Koltar, clearly you haven't checked rpg.net TTO on a near-daily basis for the last couple of years. It's deveolved into Exalted Plus X.

For various reasons, a game's rpg.net popularity doesn't accurately reflect its real world popularity. But even as that makes the game unreal in the big picture, it's still a reality on rpg.net. A very obdurate one.

We should have a Classic Traveller subforum here, since we're all over the LBBs it seems like, and we can get to arguin' about pirates and the efficiency of the Imperium and jump missiles and --

Yeah, you're right.

Yeah, you're right.

Been there, done that on other forums, we should've made T-shirts for it.
 {{{:- )
Funny thing is, I just posted TWO posts over there. The second one was friendly sarcasm - guess I gotta memorize those smiley things for that to be more obvious.

...and no I stopped checking their Role-pkaying forum on a daily basis quite awhile ago  - it got boring.

I think its a bad idea for generic RPG forums to have sub-forums dedicated to specific games that already have entire forms dedicated to just that game, it could take a lot of traffic away from the main RPG section. The large number of Exalted fans on RPGnet would better serving their own gaming needs by posting questions and comments of in depth rules discussions on the official WW Exalted board.

As a newly Exalted GM who up until recently had avoided TTO mostly because of the overwhelming number of Exalted threads, I weighed in in favor of a subforum.

How do you feel about the local Amber forum?

I am not aware of any other Amber forums official or otherwise  (I'm not saying there are not any, just they don't seem to be large enough to notice with a quick google search),and it doesn't seem to be distracting from the main forum so I don't have a problem with it.

I realise you didn't ask me, but I spoke out against it at the time, and I still feel it's inappropriate for a general topic site to give special consideration to a specific, brand-name topic due simply to preference and popularity.

I think I'll weigh in over at tBP to say the same.

Deep and pervasive problem?

I have to be frank here, I'm struggling to see the importance and the deep and pervasive problem.

As to the Amber forum, I don't mind it, but it would be nice to see Erick post a lot more in there like he said he would when it was created.  Not a knock on him as I understand he's a busy guy and all that but still...it'd be nice is all.

Perhaps you could explain why it's so deep and pervasive that Exalted takes up less than a quarter of the front page? I've already explained in that other thread why I wouldn't mind an Exalted split, but "deep and pervasive"? Sounds like someone's drama queening themselves into a corner.

James, read the TT thread closely. Fritzef does a good job of summing up the issues. They've been raised in TT over and over again by a variety of people, most of them regulars from way back.

A whole bunch of posters quietly left, reduced their presence, and/or joined therpgsite not because they got banned, or (merely) because of the heavy-handed moderation, but because Exalted crowded out the diversity that used to exist on rpg.net until two or three years ago.

PS: Just noticed you started an Exalted thread in Actual Play. Yeah well.

One's perception of the issue will vary dramatically depending on whether or not one is an Exalted fan.

I can't stand the whole aesthetic of Exalted, but I still don't care. I don't care about the Amber subforum here either.

Read my posts in the Important Thread. I'm far from an Exalted Fanboy. In fact, I was asking for it to be split off because my Exalted question got pushed to page two several times in a couple of hours and I gave up trying to get it answered. I went to the main WW Exalted forum instead.

Hey, at least they can all be in one location, where I'll never have to look again!
(alternately, they make a tighter target when corralled into a single location.) :D

RPGnet users tend not to believe in other forums.
