Exactly.  Not the person I want doing a D&D movie.

Apropos of nothing but I was watching Appleseed the other day and I wondered why Japanese cinema has accepted 'Adult' cartoons whereas Western Cinema injects adult themes into kids films (Pixar and Dreamworks are great) but still shies back from the idea of a adult or teen cartoon since the Bakki LotR or Fire and Ice.
Clone Wars had a stab I suppose but I could see a D&D animated movie, or a DC Justice League animated movie doing really well.

Its increasingly odd when the actual blockbust movies are in effect mostly cartoons due to CGI

Archer, Venture Bros, Superjail, 12 oz Mouse, Stroker and Hoop, Beavis & Butthead (well alright, that's young adult/teenager, but still not something you'd show a 12 year old like Rattatui), Aqua Teen Hunger Force, The Boondocks, Black Dynamite, Metalocalypse, Robot Chicken, Frisky Dingo - all those I've watched, and I assure you they aren't children cartoons. There is definitely an adult cartoon market nowadays. Heck, The Simpsons were fun for the whole family as well, some themes there are definitely adult.

If Bakshi made his works nowadays, the reception would have probably been way different (except for Coonskin, that stuff'd not make it past the door in modern cinema - and shame, it's an excellent film, but one of those that the SJW just don't understand). Though one could also argue, that it was perhaps his works that helped modern boom for adult cartoons.

As for Japanese culture, I'd not be waving flags entirely. From what I read and heard, anime has just as much of a stigma as it has in the West, when watched by adults, actually. And we also had more or less adult works in animation, except they are mostly aimed at "Fun for the Whole Family" range - Shrek or Monsters vs Aliens is a cinema you enjoy once as a kid, and a second time as an adult.

Well I have seen Archer and that kind of classifies except its a comedy, I don't really count robot Chicken, Family guy, Simpsons cos they are sitcom's and I was thinking more toward action movies. In the West Kids cartoons from toy story through KungFu Panda et al all have adult elements they are still primarily for kids.

I haven't seen most of the other stuff you mention. I can totally see there is a comedy strand for adult cartoons but don't knwo if the ones you list are in that category.

I was thinking specifically about stuff the quality of Appleseed, or Akira or very specifically the animated trailer for DC Heroes MMO (if you recall it)

I don't see any sigma attached to mainstream Manga out here or in Japan
