This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

Cav ,
You can be as annoying as hell at times - but in this case you do have a point.

I suspect the new poster is either a possible sock puppet -OR- a poster from some other board that recognizes me  - but I don't recognize them because thier handle here is radically different than what he uses in other places.

Agreed.  It's a non-story.

So, is "sock puppet" to become our own "personal attack"? Someone comes lashing out against you, you claim it's a "sock puppet" account in hopes of getting them to stop, seeing how it's about the only bannable offense hereabouts?  Look, if you really think someone's a sock puppet, calmly report the post and ask the resident staff to check against whomever you think is controlling it. Don't go wondering out loud without doing anything about it, hoping to get sympathy.

Awww.  Don't discourage them!  It just makes it all the more obvious what sycophant ankle-hiders they are.

"Sycophant"?  Isn't that what Noxy used to call Ed?  Maybe you're a sock puppet, too!

Interestingly enough, a few local eateries offer meals free to servicemen who show up in their uniform. I respect that they do this.

Quote from: CavScout;244371Which system is this? 25% of Israel's casualties in the '06 Lebanon war were do to missile attacks on their armor.

He may be talking about APS (Active Protection System), though if he is, he really has his facts wrong. There are two systems in the works, an Isreali one (Trophy) and an American one. The Isrealis didn't have the system during the Lebanon war, it is being pushed forward due to the high armour casualies during the conflict.

A few things - I don't think that American troops didn't get the system because of lobbying. In fact, it looks like lawmakers are lobbying for the Isreali system, despite the fact that the American military don't like the look of it. They don't trust the claims as to the effectiveness of the weapon and fear that it could lead to heavy collateral damage (read: civilian and friendly military casualties) in urban combat areas. The military prefers the American version, which seems less likely to inflict collateral damage:

From wikipedia (maj. gen's quote also in pdf above):
There is also a chance for civilian or friendly force collateral damage. Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Sorenson, a top U.S. Army acquisition official, said “In a tight urban area, the Trophy system may take out the RPG, but we may kill 20 people in the process. That is a concern we have that we haven’t fully evaluated.” The standard Trophy system is also too heavy and draws too much power to use on anything but a tank.

EDIT: ah, found out more about the American APS system, Quick Kill. This is probably what he was talking about:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quick_Kill_active_protection_system

So, the American version is far from being ready, but the Isreali one has flaws as well. Is it better to have a flawed version in place now, which might result in a better version never being built, or should you wait for the good version to be built?

I suppose it really depends on how flawed the first version is. if Sorenson is right, the Trophy could end up killing as many people as it saves (if not more). On the other hand, that could be made up to badmouth the Trophy system.

Spike

Sadly, the Military Aquisition system is horribly, deeply, fatally corrupt, and utterly outside the blame laying that started all this.  There is a documantary that has been recommended to me as a 'black comedy' called, Pentagon Wars that helps illustrate this.

Part of the problem is the simple shoddy shit done by any heavily political beaurocrasy (seperate from Dems/Repubs... just political), and a good chunk of it is personal corruption, specfically 'bribes' in the form of sweet contractor or executive board jobs offered to officers in charge of approving things when they inevitably retire.
For you the day you found a minor error in a Post by Spike and forced him to admit it, it was the greatest day of your internet life.  For me it was... Tuesday.

For the curious: Apparently, in person, I sound exactly like the Youtube Character The Nostalgia Critic.   I have no words.
