St:Voy is being repeated on the freeview satellite channel CBS Action. They've just broadcast Scorpion. I have a fondness for Voyager, despite some horrendous moments ("skeletal lock?", says Janewway, "yes, I just invented it, I think it will work" says Torres).
It's been said on here that grimdark is too grimdark and that stuff like Star Trek is what we need. I don't know who said that or when, but I'm sure i'm right. I usually am.
But consider: Voyager is irretrievably sent to the other end of the entire galaxy by means of inscrutable all powerful alien whim. They are constantly beset by duplicitous, equally inscrutabkle or just downright hostile aliens, some of whom are very advanced. Not least of all the Borg and Species 8472 who are psychic and want to purge the galaxy.
There is a race of aliens called the Q who are as gods to everyone else and can do anything. One of them frequently torments starship captains costing the lives of innocent crewmembers.
One of the key members of the Federation are stronger, moer long lived, and smarter than anyone else within and are so prone to violence they had to learn to suppress their emotions. They are also somewhat telepathic and subject to a mating urge that overrides everything that it must be sheathed in ritual.
They have a cousin race that engages in state sanctioned torture and political oppression on a cosmic scale.
There is another race who value warfare as sport and cloak it in honour.
There is a race of greedy little trolls whose powerbase is inexplicable but are obsessed with exploitation and profit, even and especially among their own kind.
Galactic phenomena appear with extraordinary regularity in forms never before encountered, sometimes posessing intelligences that drive them to torture and murder.
Slavery is commonplace in one part of the alpha quadrant.
The Borg are unstoppable, unassailable, cannot be reaosned with and yet driven by a singular emotive intelligence.
The Hirogen hunt people for sport.
Every week people die on starships in cruel and unusual ways and yet children also live on starships.
The Federation was nearly destroyed by a militaristic force slaved to a race of shapeshifters who invaded the very heart of the federation inspiring paranoia to the point of martial law.
The human race one practiced racial and genetic supremacy.
it's all good!
