Title: Fuck these dysfunctional, insecure actresses
Post by: J Arcane on June 08, 2007, 09:23:46 PM
I've come to the realization that, basically, you can sum up the core driving force behind much of the retardation of online discourse as a function of it's users pathetic insecurities.  It's a bunch of whiny drama queens splattering their psych issues all over the screen.

The Xbox Live kiddoes are confused and insecure about their manhood, so have to screech faggot at everyone.

The console fanboys on Evil Avatar are so unsure about their own purchasing descisions that they spend more time defending their choice of game system to a bunch of random yahoos like themselves than they do actualyl playing the damn things.

RPGnet's entire moderation approach is entirely centered around catering to everyone's insecurities, most important of all, the moderator's fear of any real or imagined threat to their authority, to the extent they let shitheads like Darren Maclennan run rampant and do nothing because actually addressing his behavior honestly involves questioning their power structure.

Pundit's so insecure about his choice of gaming system that apparently he actually sees a nutjob who believes that games can cause literal damage to the brain is a threat to his fragile sensibilities, and spins imaginary wars and hides behind the coattails of a game he doesn't even really care about to justify his tastes for a game that got started as girly fantasy and magic deer.

Jimbob's ego is so fragile that apparently he has to excuse any criticism of his ideas and theories by accusing the critics of not being gamers.

The Forge's entire attempt at a movement ultimately boils down to the fact that they can't let themselves admit who they really are.  You design roleplaying games, that makes you a geek, now shut the fuck up and get over it.

Maybe if everyone wasn't spending so damn much time trying to justify themselves, and would just be who they are and shut the fuck up with the petulant whining and spinelessness, this whole fucking Internet would be a happier place?

I'm a fuckin' geek, I like what I like, and I don't really give two flaming shits about what the lot of you think about it.  I dont' need your approval to like what I like; I'm the only one who gets the right to judge me and mine.

I do admit I make things worse in my own part, because I just can't help but take potshots at fucksticks who want to bend the entire world to conform to their personal insecurities.

Grow a pair, learn to not give a shit about what everyone else thinks of you and how you choose to have a good time, and stop dragging your issues out all over the public eye for once.  Cut the emo shit.

So come on, let's hear it.  What do you like that you're not supposed to like?  A secret love of Dogs in the Vineyard that dare not speak it's name?  An unhealthy fetish for games with detailed mechanics for blood loss?  A favorite TV series that is so not what a good manly man is supposed to have a taste for?  Dirty habits?  Wierd tastes and kinks?

Just be who you are, and fuck everyone else.  It's the only healthy way to live your life.  Anything less leads to madness and stupidity.

You can't make me.  I'll be as emo as I fuckin' want to be, and I don't give a shit what you think about it!  I'ma go out and buy some ripped black T-shirts now. :D

But, seriously ... I feel left out.  The things you're listing as dark secrets just aren't secret with me.  Ferinstance, I love me some Shoujo anime and manga.  Stories about girls, aimed at girls, with quiet, painful, shy, heart-breaking characters who get their identities folded, spindled and mutilated, then make something beautiful out of the new person they are.

Love.  Them.  Princess Nine, Fruits Basket, Haibane Renme, the list goes on and on.  Don't even get me started about Kare Kano.  Every time I start to describe Kare Kano to people I end up bawlin' my fuckin' eyes out.

Should I be hiding this?  I'm makin' a game about this stuff, and I want everyone to know.  I mean, shit ... life's too short already without wasting time worrying whether it's okay to love what you love.

Hey man, I have a deep and abiding love of Azumanga Daioh.  Chiyo's song from the webisode, "Hai Sarabai" is the sort of absolutely sacchirinely sweet stuff even I usually loathe, but goddamn if my head don't bob the whole time it plays.

So.  Damn.  Cute.

And Chiho tries so hard in the relay race!  And that guy from the other class is all like "Oh, that was pathetic," but then Sakaki-sama's all like, ZOOM!, and ...

You got me started.  I'm pretty sure I warned you about getting me started.  You're gonna end up with me raving about Peach Girl, and I know none of us wants to go there.

I don't understand hiding this stuff ... particularly on the all-anonymizing internet.  I realize that people do it, but I can't for the life of me figure out why.  I know it's a cliche, but the phrase that comes to mind really is "What is the WORST that can happen?"

Nine jackasses are gonna tell you you're stupid, and one nice guy is going to say "Hey, I like that too ... but I never had the guts to admit it before!" and you come out of the whole exchange ahead by the acquaintance of one nice guy.

I don't think it's so much about hiding stuff, if they hid stuff, we'd never have to hear them whining about it.

It's more about this wierd idea of having to justify your tastes to a bunch of random fuckwits online.

there was a great article I posted here some months back, about how basically, internet reviews of video games have gotten to the point where, as criticism, they don't even matter anymore.  The only people who read them most of the time aren't looking for information or an opinion, but rather validation of their own (often preformed prior to even playing the game).

I think that's rather what I'm on about.

Hmmm ... I can see expressing your tastes, in search of the one kindred soul I list above.  But if you've got nine people who want to strongly disagree with you ... does that even merit attention?  They can't do anything to change who you are, unless they convince you to do it to yourself.

I tihnk you've got it.  I talk about stuff I like or that I don't like, and if someone gives me shit about it, I'm liable to give them shit back, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter a fucking bit, I'm still gonna like what I like and nothing anyone can say can change that.

I think crap like Pundit's "War" just boils down to not having the conviction to really just accept what you like and who you are.  I mean come on, you've gotta be more than a touch oversensitive if you actually take remarks about a game causing "literal brain damage" as a serious threat to the hobby as we know it.

I guess I'm just a bit more restrained by nature.  Increasingly, these days, if somebody gives me shit over my beliefs, my first reaction is to think "Does this guy matter enough to me that I should, even for a moment, become the kind of guy who lobs insults around on an internet forum?  Do I want him to give him the power to change me that way?"

Sometimes I think it's worth it (or I don't think about it at all) and I let fly.  But, y'know, as time goes on I more and more think, "Nah ... ain't worth it."  I dunno whether that's being wise or just being lazy, or both.

So what the fuck is the psychology of a dude who comes onto sites run by guys he claims to despise, and spends his time engaging in hysterical dramatics where he whines and bitches about long lists of other people?

I mean fuck, your little analysis gives us a far more accurate picture of your own fucking neuroses than those of anyone on your list.

I mean really, how fucking fragile do you have to be to go around saying "all these guys are insignificant guys arguing about insignificant things! They just pick fights because they're really insecure!" and then going on to talk on and on and on about them, in multiple posts, practically stalking some of them, spending inordinate amounts of time on one of theirs' forum, and picking fights?

Look to your own diagnosis, Dr. Freud...

80s clone 101 showing signs of temporal (70s) drift.  Ready infusion of pure 1984ium and Debbie Gibson back catalogue.  If that doesn't bring it back online, go for 300ml intravenous of Rickastleyzene and 500ml sub-cutaneous of Duranduranethylene.  Stat.

there are few people in life which really matter.  folks on the internet, and folks in general, don't.  immediate friends & family, that's about it.

i also don't see the point in hiding anything.  i like things as varied as metal and the "marmalade boy" manga.  variety is the spice of life

i enjoy some of the drama that erupts from these online personality conflicts, tho.  just like watching a trainwreck

I got plenty of insecurities. None have anything to do with gaming. Fewer cause me to get all angry over internet stuff.

Oddly, I find that I don't so much come here to spout about what I like and dislike as to find out what others like and dislike. I didn't know much outside of D20 coming here, and reading here helps me figure beforehand what about a game rocks or is wonky before I spend my hard earned money on it. Also, it helps to know what options I have in designing my own game. To give one example, I learned what dicepools are on this site... and to avoid them like the plague in any game I intend to sell.

That said, I prefer opinionated ranting about the content of RPGs... be it settings, systems, published adventures, hell even minis... as opposed to the reactionary rants against individuals and sites I don't give a shit about. If I gave a shit about Ron Edwards, I'd read his essays (or if I gave a shit in the negative, I'd avoid his essays). Likewise for the Forge or RPGnet or even Pundit. Anyway, this hate-on for people I don't know or care about only bothers me in that it's so interspersed with actual RPG discussion. Which means I have to read a bunch of shit I don't care about to get to the stuff I do care about. I still read because the good stuff is still worth the time spent looking, but... my patience is not infinite.

Yes! On this path lie madness and dead squirrels.

But I know so many smart people who are entirely too concerned about what other people think. Ohh, so someone hates your idea, so what? You don't need to defend it if that person is a MORON. In fact, you'll just look even more stupid for doing so.

The one with the scene in that bunker, where the soldiers are all sitting there "Oh shit, we're gonna die," and the girl/ultimate-weapon is hanging with them, trying to work up the willpower to use her abilities again, and she's just infinitely weary ... not physically, but down in her soul ... weary of being this weapon that destroys and obliterates, weary of people counting on her.  But then the soldiers talk her into wiping out an entire advancing regiment, and you see in their eyes as they're doing it that they know that they're robbing this girl of her innocence piece by piece, and they hate themselves for it, but they're just not ready to die to protect her?

It's that one, right?

Ever since I got a GreenCine subscription my ability to keep up in obscure anime conversations has been growing by leaps and bounds.  Some day I may even feel that I deserve the title "otaku."
