This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

OK, plenty of movie threads here. Try reading a fucking book or two.

"The science of Battlestar Galactica" is a decent look at the science in BSG, a show with a fair amount of science, like people surviving brief exposure to hard vacuum, habitable planets likely orbiting G,F and K type stars,  quantum entanglement and more. It's pretty good for people who like actual science in their science fiction.

"The god particle" by Leon Lederman. Straight up solid science, written by a Nobel prize winning physicist and director of the Fermi national accelerator laboratory. Humanizes both quantum physics and the scientists who study it.

"Darwin's devices." By john long. Details how computer modeling shows how evolution occurred in biological systems and how using simulated evolution helps design advanced robotics and machines today.

"Solar express" by L. E. Modessit. A very hard sf novel dealing with.first contact with an alien artifact in the next century.  Kind of plodding in detail about maintenance and operation of a moon base and spacecraft. Very detail oriented. Also in a world where Hollywood bends over backward to kiss the Chinese government's ass to get movies ran in china the author has the balls to portray the Chinese government in a very accurate and unflattering light. Not for everyone but a good read for hard sf lovers.

"Crysis legion" by Peter Watts. Normally books based on video games suck. Normally they're not written by a hardcore and high quality sf writers like Peter Watts.  Crysis legion is based on the FPS crysis 2. Peter watts turns it into pretty good solid SF with a lot of real science thrown in. You may need a tablet handy to look up some words and terms he uses in the book. A great blend if military action and solid science fiction.

Medieval Machine. It's about the industrial revolution of the middle ages. While parts are dry, with tables and charts about food production, there are glimpses into the lives of the laborers and farmers and miners of the time. I liked it.
The notion of an exclusionary and hostile RPG community is a fever dream of zealots who view all social dynamics through a narrow keyhole of structural oppression.

Okay, Schwartzwald, let's discuss Human Action by Ludwig von Mises.

"Atlas Shrugged" and "The Fountainhead" can always be fun books to read....or possibly "Foundation" by Isaac Asimov....

The Magic Goes Away by Larry Niven is a cautionary tale about conservation using a fantasy lens to make the lesson palpable and very fun reading. I highly recommend it.
