SPECIAL NOTICE
Malicious code was found on the site, which has been removed, but would have been able to access files and the database, revealing email addresses, posts, and encoded passwords (which would need to be decoded). However, there is no direct evidence that any such activity occurred. REGARDLESS, BE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS. And as is good practice, remember to never use the same password on more than one site. While performing housekeeping, we also decided to upgrade the forums.
This is a site for discussing roleplaying games. Have fun doing so, but there is one major rule: do not discuss political issues that aren't directly and uniquely related to the subject of the thread and about gaming. While this site is dedicated to free speech, the following will not be tolerated: devolving a thread into unrelated political discussion, sockpuppeting (using multiple and/or bogus accounts), disrupting topics without contributing to them, and posting images that could get someone fired in the workplace (an external link is OK, but clearly mark it as Not Safe For Work, or NSFW). If you receive a warning, please take it seriously and either move on to another topic or steer the discussion back to its original RPG-related theme.

I haven't used it yet, but it seems like I need something like it (too many IM accounts, you see). Do you have any experience with Pidgin? If so, can you share any user tips?

The proxy at work prevents it, except for Lotus Sametime, but I use it at home.  Easy to set up, easy to use.  I don't know how it compares to Trillian these days, as I haven't used it in years.

Pidgin will never support skins, according to their site.  How much difference that makes in your choice is up to you.

I'm a big fan of pidgin, and I feel it works well. I'm on FreeBsd and the only other client that comes close is kopete.

Be sure to set your preferences first thing, and some of the plugins are useful. I use the history one to show me what was said in the last conversation with a person so I can get my memory jogged if it's been a while.

Trillian is far more bloated and buggy than Pidgin.

It's the only IM client I've used for years -- ever since Trillian turned to nagware, actually. It's incredibly stable, and it works. It's probably not as flashy as Trillian is (I wouldn't know), but it works as intended, and that's good enough for me.

I second what's been said about looking through the plugins and finding things to make your user experience more pleasant. Also make sure to turn on chat logging if you want to remember past conversations -- it's off by default.
